Chapter 4

Ferst's Smile

"What is that smile?

Why can' t you figure it out?"

- Ferst -

Ferst's smile lingered in my mind all the way back to my dorm. I sat on the bed, lost in thought, so deep that I accidentally conjured an image of Ferst, the hero, without realising it.

"You haven' t written the new chapter yet," Ferst popped up before me in my imagination.

"Ferst?" My eyes widened. I didn' t mean to write anything right now, but somehow, I ended up summoning him.

"Well, since you' re here, can you help me with something?"

Might as well ask. No harm in trying, right?

"Help with what?" Ferst raised his eyebrows.

"Let me see your smile," I asked with a serious look.

"Smile?" Ferst looked at me in confusion.

"Yeah," I nodded. "Can you do that? I want to see."

My request made Ferst pause for a moment. He seemed like he wanted to ask why, but in the end, he said nothing.

Ferst lifted the corners of his mouth slightly, showing that he was indeed smiling.

"Not quite," I muttered. "The emotion needs to be stronger. Right now you're smiling like you're having fun."

The smile from the hero standing before me was nothing like the one I had seen from the real Ferst at the café.

"So, you want a full-force smile, huh?" Ferst must have heard my grumbling because he shifted into a new kind of grin.

The young man flashed a terrifying grin.

"Whoa, no, that's not it!" I jumped. "That' s the smile of a villain threatening someone!"

This grin from Ferst sent chills down my spine. I had only ever written about him smiling like that at his opponents, but seeing him smile that way at me in person was terrifying.

"So, what kind of smile do you want?" Ferst asked in a calm voice.

"Hmm..." I dug deep into my memory, trying to recall that specific smile from Ferst earlier today, and then described it in words.

"It's not a playful smile, not a scary one, but a smile mixed with positive emotions."

"Positive, huh?" Ferst echoed my words, then curved his lips into a heart-stopping, cool grin.

I could only narrow my eyes and stare.

"Not this smile either?" Ferst asked, still holding that charming pose.

"Nope," I replied honestly. "That's your 'handsome smirk,' full of self-confidence. You smile like that when you're about to show off something."

"True," Ferst nodded. "I just wanted to show you how good I look when I smile."

"Mm-hmm," I mumbled in agreement. I had to admit, Ferst was good-looking. As for his self-assuredness about his appearance, I couldn't blame anyone but myself — after all, I was the one who created him to be that way.
