ADRIANA'S SNEAKERS SCUFFED LIGHTLY AGAINST THE PAVEMENT AS SHE MADE HER WAY TO CHRIS'S HOUSE, her phone buzzing in her hand with his last text.

a small, involuntary smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. chris always had this way of turning even the simplest plans into competitions. whether it was racing to see who could chug a soda fastest, arguing over who was the better mario kart player, or who could pull off the best trick on his old skateboard, it was always something. and as much as adriana pretended to be annoyed, she liked it. she liked him.
she tucked her phone into her pocket and crossed his driveway, spotting his skateboard propped against the garage door, worn down from the countless afternoons they'd spent trying to one-up each other. the sight made her heart twist in a way that felt both familiar and confusing.
before she could knock, the front door swung open, and there he was.
"you're late," chris teased, his signature grin lighting up his face. his dark hair was messier than usual, falling into his eyes in that effortlessly perfect way it always did. the sleeves of his hoodie, his hoodie, the one he practically lived in, were shoved up to his elbows, revealing the tan skin of his forearms. he leaned against the doorframe, looking entirely too pleased with himself.
