On a particularly late sunny afternoon, the four frigid fiends of room 4444 sat in one of their classes—Combat and Navigation 1.
Over the span of a whole academic year, the class included lessons regarding the hand-to-hand combat training, terrain navigation, honing of zero-gravity combat skills, and psyche fortification training. All theoretical knowledge was always quickly put to use during the Practicals class, showing the meticulous and holistic approach the combat course faculty department painstakingly took.
For this class, Yu Yan was most interested in the psyche fortification lesson listed in the syllabus that he read before he applied for the course. The class description briefly mentioned that this lesson allowed students to train, not just the right mentality and composure that a soldier should have, but also their spiritual power.
Although he did use transcoding for Feng Xuo to practice manipulation and control on the sideline, he has yet to practice it in such a formal setting.
The instructor, a grizzled veteran named Captain Roth, paced the front of the classroom, his voice booming as he discussed the nuances of tactical formations in combat scenarios depending on various known terrains—the day's lesson.
"In such instances of terrain disadvantage, it's better to re-ascertain the purpose of your mission and choose the strategy that fits best moving forward; whether it's construction and fortification for defense, drones for reconnaissance, or deception and misinformation for offense.
"Of course, these are just the basics and any seasoned tactician would have seen through any of your plans. Sometimes you'd only have split second to think, decide, and act. If even one of these veterans were to be your enemy, then you rookies would have been screwed over twice in a minute."
A braver soul raised his hand and said, "Instructor, our credibility doesn't even warrant a guarantee of at least five minutes?"
Roth shot him a look, "No. You underestimate your lack of credibility."
He didn't forget to bring down their ego to rock bottom. Such was the duty bestowed to him by his predecessor and now to be bestowed by him to his students.
Roth: Passing generational insecurity and apprehension is like the thing that puts food on the table in the military.
(A/N: 吃饭的家伙 (Chīfàn de jiāhuo) – Straightforwardly translated is "the tool for eating" or means "the thing that puts food on the table". Basically, it also means their 'livelihood' but in the sentence, it leans more towards the meaning of not being able to afford losing the 'thing' in order to survive.)
The students smirked at the short intermission but regardless, Roth monologued relentlessly with his lesson, "Now, let's talk about retreat tactics. What most cadets fail to understand is that retreating isn't the same as surrendering."
He fixed the class with a steely gaze.
"Young as you all are, I'd expect a good few to think retreat is a sign of failure and defeat. It's not something new when a rookie goes and disobeys orders just because they thought they could handle things on their own or thought better but... Do that, and I'll break your legs myself.
He squinted at the sweating cadets who averted their eyes nervously to avoid being singled out by their teacher.
"There's a reason why people are above you, so follow their orders. But if some of you ever get to a position high enough to call the shots, you better damn ingrain the lessons and strategies I teach into your brains." Uncharacteristically, he said in a lower voice, "Your future soldiers' life and death will be your sole responsibility."
