Hearts In Tune 18

The sound of bullets hitting glass, the crashing of said glass and the dust of the under construction expressway mixed together to form a ringing in Aminu’s ears. His heart rate rose for a moment until he found that he was safe and sound, he had ducked when the first bullet hit and that quick decision must have saved his life.

“Your Excellency!” He heard his head of security scream before seeing the man’s agitated face through the space in the glass that had shattered. Aminu raised himself slowly, feeling the slight pain in his limbs from being cramped in the small corner between the front seat and the back seat.

“I’m fine. Alhamdulilah, I’m fine.” The man nodded and walked away, his gun cocked and ready to be shot. Aminu raised his head and risked looking around, knowing his long neck was fair game at this point but he did not care.

The head of security came rushing back and immediately, they began moving, leaving the dusty roads behind them to the main city of Kano. Aminu watched as they sped past the fields and little farmhouses that fed the state from their hands to the tables of those who ate the food they planted. He wondered if he was doing enough, if he had even gotten a chance to scratch the surface at making their lives better than he met it. He hoped that they would not curse him when they heard his name, maybe not bless him, but not curse him.

His mother was waiting at the door when he arrived at the governor’s residence once the gates that divided the residence from the offices shut, he jumped out of the vehicle to comfort his mother who was visibly shaking once he reached her.

“Alhamdulilah. Alhamdulilah. I was so scared, the news said you had been fatally attacked.” She roamed his face with her eyes and finger, feeling his neck and arms for injury signs. Aminu pulled out of her arms and raised his brows in question, “The news?”

His mother nodded emphatically, increasing Aminu’s suspicion that it had been a hoax for something else. He helped his mother back up the stairs that led inside the house and shut the door, not before giving orders to the head of security staff.

“They’re still reporting it. Look.” Aminu left his mother’s arm and walked to the front of the large tv in the main living room to watch the channels news broadcaster talk about the shooting that occurred less than forty five minutes earlier with so much information than he himself who was involved in the situation.

“How do they know these things?” Aminu asked out loud but soon heard the doors open and shut with the sound of footsteps reaching him in no time. He pointed quizzically to the television and watched as his head of security’s mouth dropped open as well.

“I’ve not spoken to anyone, who leaked it? Ans you’re alive and well for God’s sake! What’s this news being framed as though you’re dead?” Aminu’s phone rang, ending the tirade the other man was in and he swiped accept without even looking at the screen.

“What hospital are you in? What happened exactly?” Aminu shook his head, as annoyed as he was with his mentor, he still had to be respectful. Aminu looked at his mother who was still as white as a sheet and had now taken a seat to calm herself her hands threading her tasbih with a strength he last saw her use when he was at university.

“I’m fine sir, nothing is wrong with me. I have no idea where they’ve got their information from. No one on my convoy was hurt in anyway even.” Aminu heard his mentor breathe out in relief before he said his thanks to Allah.
