Sonja Nehalenniasdóttir is finally free.
After a daring escape from servitude and a sharp rise to first mate of the North Sea's most notorious pirate crew, she's survived punishing storms, several double crosses, and even diffused a mutiny against the cunning Captain Strijk, to whom is she is unwaveringly loyal and utterly indebted.

But when Jan Van Der Zee, her former master, begins hunting her, she's faced with a new challenge.
A sea-spanning game is on, and freedom,
revenge on Van Der Zee, and a pardon for
Captain Strijk are all at play.

Yet Sonja knows she is going to need more than her grit and the skill of her ship mates to survive Van Der Zee a second time—it's just a matter of knowing what she can risk to cover the cost of her freedom.

a new year means a new novella!!

i am so pleased to present my 2025 open novella contest entry, "SAILS OF WRATH AND SILVER," which follows prompt no. 110: "20 days of freedom." it is also set against the backdrop of prompt. no. 41: "at that moment, she realized she had to end the toxic relationship for good. she disappeared from the country, leaving everything behind to start fresh. for a while. she had relied on him just to survive, but now she knew it was time to break free and reclaim her life."

inspired by my and my sister's rewatch of the series "black sails," combined with a history course i took on the 17th century age of sail, "SAILS OF WRATH AND SILVER" is my exploration of typical pirate themes like class relations, gender patterns, economic motives/effects, and legal complications. however, unlike most pirate media, it is not set in the caribbean! it's set in a very overlooked region of historical piracy: the north sea. this setting swap has allowed me to add a twist to the genre while also exploring the history of scandinavian nations.

additionally, this is my fifth time participating in the onc and i am so excited to continue with a few of my traditions. the main one is that i have been posting new chapters to my onc guidebook, "novellas and new roast." this long-running project contains many a tip and trick about the contest and writing in general. i highly recommend checking it out if you haven't already, even if you just skim the section of mini-interviews with past winners.

as always, thank you for supporting my work. don't forget to vote, comment, and add "SAILS OF WRATH AND SILVER" to one of your reading lists if you find yourself enjoying it.

happy reading and writing! ♡♡
