Hearts In Tune 15
“Mr Dikko is here, Your Excellency.” Aminu lifted his head from the irrigation document he was reading and nodded at Ladi who pushed the door further and invited his best friend into the room. Aminu watched with slight annoyance as Ladi bowed and scraped to his friend until he shut the door and left.
“Your Excellency!” Aminu rolled his eyes and focused his attention on the document he was reading before Hammad arrived, it was a battle to get his friend to stop calling him ‘Your Excellency’ in that mocking tone and he had to ignore him for it to happen.
“Ignoring me? No be your name be that?” Aminu fought himself and won, signing off the document before raising his head again.
“Are you alright in the head?” Hammad chuckled at the insult but came around to shake his hand firmly. Aminu got up and they walked to the settee in the corner, he had decorated his office to be a place he could have guests and on days like this he was glad he didn’t have to sit behind that imposing oak desk and speak to his friend.
He rang for some tea while Hammad went through his phone. “Are you going to be at Isma’il’s wedding tomorrow? He’s marrying his second wife.” Aminu considered it for a second before nodding in agreement.
“Just remember to get Ladi to make a break in my schedule so I can show up at the mosque and leave afterwards.” The door opened just as Hammad wanted to speak so he shut up and let the staff set the tea set on the coffee table, Aminu watched them leave before Hammad turned to face him squarely.
“Wait, you’re going? I don’t have to force you?” Aminu scooted forward to pour them each some earl grey tea into their cups. He only sent his friend a look, which made Hammad a lot more concerned.
“I have a wedding to invite them to in a few weeks, i better start showing up at whatever events they invite me to, otherwise I’ll not have any groomsmen. I don’t know how many bridesmaids this woman has, I don’t want to fall short.” Hammad’s mocking laughter filled the room while Aminu took a sip of his hot tea to find some semblance of peace in the madness that was this conversation.
“Wait, you’re taking this thing seriously. I thought it was a sham marriage?” Aminu sent his friend a quelling look, Hammad raised his hands and accepted the gesture. Aminu sighed, he was older than Hammad by a few years anyways.
“If I’m going into it, as I already am, there’s no reason to make her feel like she has to force me to do anything. Wedding planning is hard, I remember Amina had to be hospitalized twice during our wedding planning.” Aminu watched from the corner of his eye as Hammad took a sip of his tea, placed the tea cup back on the saucer with a wrinkle on his forehead.
“It could never be me though, this whole arranged marriage shenanigans, or even this thing you people are doing, I could never do it. I need to know the person I will marry for at least a year before jumping into anything. I really could Never.” Aminu raised his brow at his friend, thinking of his family and realized that Hammad had never had to do anything for the family name, he had worked hard and toed the line his parents set for him but had never had a moment where he had to grasp public opinion about himself.
