SUKI AWOKE TO the blinding white light surrounding her. Noise came from all sides of the room as she realised she was late waking up. But then it hit her. She was alone in her bed. She remembered the vivid flashbacks she had experienced in the middle of the night, the way Young-il had woken her up, listened to her and comforted her until she fell asleep. And he stayed there for her.
Or so she thought.
"Good morning, sleepy head." She finally came round to the present time, Young-il stood at the end of her bed. "I hope I didn't wake you this morning. I got you breakfast." He held out a packet with a bun inside with a carton of milk. She smiled at his kind gesture, taking the packet and carton of milk from him.
"Thank you, I appreciate it." She started to open the packet. "Do you want the milk? I can't drink milk." She held out the carton as he sat down on his bed. His laugh filled the room as she raised her eyebrows at him.
"We have something in common there." He grinned. "I can't have milk at all. Used to get me told off as a child."
"I know the feeling." She began eating the bun, looking around her as everyone was sat in their groups again. "Do you think we'll be playing the second game soon?" He nodded. Her heart sank. She wasn't prepared. She didn't want to die today.
"I suspect that it won't be long. You should eat up. You need your energy after last night." He spoke softly. His words were kind, something she had realised about him was that he was caring of his peers and she liked that about him.
"About last night, I really hope I didn't overstep by asking you to stay." Her words were almost inaudible as she looked down at her lap, avoiding eye contact.
"Not at all, Suki. You needed a friend." Her heart skipped hearing his words. No. Now was not the time to be feeling these kinds of emotions. "I would do it again if I had to. Just to make sure you're okay."
"Well considering we're about to play the second game there might not be a next time." She admitted. She had no hope for this next game. She was sure this was it.
"Don't say that." He frowned. Something in him changed. A flicker of fear? Worry? She was struggling to tell in that moment. "You'll be just fine."
"I sure hope you're right." She sighed, finishing her food. Just then, the tannoy began to blare.
"Attention players, the second game will commence momentarily. Please follow the instructions from our staff." With that, the buzzer sounded, the door opening wide as several masked soldiers entered the room.
