Hearts In Tune 14

“It’s bad enough that I feel like I’m auditioning as a wife for Aminu and now I have to audition for his mother too?” Hafsah patted Sameerah’s newly plaited hair in a bid to calm her down but it seemed to irritate her more as she shrugged off Hafsah’s hand.

“I don’t think it’s so o.” Sameerah had turned around before Hafsah knew it and she was faced by her best friend’s fiery eyes. Hafsah knew she had taken the wrong side, and would get told off for her choice.

“Whose side are you ever on? You’re supposed to be annoyed on my behalf not trying to make logical sense here. I know his mother is worried, but isn’t Mami worried as well? I’m marrying someone she has only ever seen on TV, entering a whole new era of my life with me as the wife of a governor. Hafs, I don’t know what to do. I’m a train wreck inside, I’m dying inside but his mother thinks I might hurt him? How is it her business to be scared?” She asked Hafsah, getting even annoyed as she spoke. It had been a tumultuous call earlier with Aminu as she had to be the logical person and agree to have his mother live with them.

“Mimi…” Hafsah started but Sameerah continued to barrel on, refusing to stop speaking.

“He made promises to me, Hafs, how can he make do on those promises now?” She could no longer speak so she lay her chin on her knees, with Hafsah patting her back slowly till she calmed down completely. Once she no longer shook from the force of her rage, Hafsah sank to the floor with her and began to speak.

“I’m sorry. I always have your back, I always will.” Sameerah lifted her eyes to her meet her friend’s and they clasped hands to comfort one another.

“I don’t even know why I reacted like that, I accepted when Aminu asked.” Sameerah said, she had been calm with a smile while she discussed it with Aminu. He had been so apologetic that it was impossible for her to be anything but accepting of his seemingly small wish.

“Why though? You could have been firm, say no.” Sameerah sighed and leaned her head on the sofa, seeking some more comfort for her now strained neck.

“I didn’t want to end with me saying something I’ll regret. You know how I am when I’m angry? I just wanted to still have a groom by September. He has the whole of Kano trying to marry him, me however, I’m thirty two with no prospects.” Hafsah began to shake her head as soon as the latter end of Sameerah’s sentence dropped.

“He’s not the only choice you have, Mimi. He’s not your only choice, wallahi. We can find you someone else, we’ve talked about this many times.” Sameerah moved uncomfortably, she had begun imagining Aminu as her husband and could honestly not bring herself to do with someone else.

“Who is to say the next person isn’t coming with more baggage? At least he was courteous enough to let me know. And the ones you’ve sent my way are crazy people.” Sameerah turned to see her best friend laughing so hard at her.

“What, did I lie?” The sound of the adhaan for Isha started in Sameerah’s small apartment and it’s stopped whatever Hafsah would have said which made Sameerah look at her differently but they both got up to pray.

They had the same thoughts on their minds as they prayed and once they were done, Sameerah stepped away to get them some cut fruits that she put in the fridge for their movie marathon. Hafsah was doing a test run for leaving her girls for the night and so far it was going well since her husband had only called once to ask where they kept the light up cups.
