It was a miracle Hope Stark existed. For one, she wasn't planned. Then, her parents decided to go through with the pregnancy solely because of Obadiah Stane's convincing - he said it was so SI had an heir and how Tony could continue to party without repercussions, but it was really so he could mold her into what he wanted the future of the company to be. The story of her birth was so bad, some people used it as a cautionary tale. Her mother had been involved in a hit-and-run. There had to be an emergency C-section. She came out blue with the cord wrapped around her neck, and five weeks early to boot.
Hope likes to think her mother died in the place of her, giving the second and last gift of life to her daughter.
Growing up, she had a litany of issues - health and otherwise. Asthma making the cold months worse than one would think and a fainting condition constantly trying to take her out whenever she moved too quickly. Because of who her father was, she had been kidnapped more times than she could count. She had also almost died each time. It wasn't common knowledge how covering or taping an asthmatic's mouth could kill them, so Tony Stark had done the honors of informing the public.
It was a miracle she survived and became a fully functioning adult.
