Chapter 9 - Save You With What? Comrades!
It is said that wisdom depends on the number of grooves in the cerebral cortex and the size of the brain. On the third morning of Yuan Zhan's absence, Yan Mo looked at the wooden and bone needles, a few knives, and the purified yellowish white salt particles sent over by He Tu. He couldn't help but wish he could open up the people's brains to understand how they thought.
He considered himself an equal and didn't look down on ancient people. What they lacked compared to modern individuals was simply the accumulation of knowledge. Their wisdom wasn't inferior; rather, the advantage of modern people was due to thousands of years of history that allowed them to think about things in ways the ancients couldn't fathom.
Now that He Tu had sent over the items, it made him realize the ingenuity of the ancient people. Their comprehension and abilities were much better than he expected.
Seeing Yan Mo's surprised expression, He Tu smiled slightly and explained, "You said the needle should be this shape, so I thought about it. I wondered if there was something that could go through fur and turn it into a container. Then, a leather rope could be put through the opening to help Da He and me carry more items when we go out. We usually hang things on our waist, and sometimes they fall off if we're not careful."
Yan Mo understood.
"I used to think about grinding a hole with a bone spur, but the leather is too thick for that. It doesn't work well. Instead, I used a stone to try and drill through it, then strung a leather strap through the hole. I never thought about using hair or horsehair as a substitute for rope before, though... but these don't seem strong enough."
"There's no twine or thread, so we have to use what we can. When I get a chance, I'll teach you how to suture. That method works better for human bodies than using hair or a horse's mane."
He Tu nodded, quietly noting everything Yan Mo said. "Take a look and see if they're useful. If not, I'll remake them. As for the salt... that's all we could manage from the three of our households. It's difficult to make, and this is all we have."
"It's enough. We'll have plenty left over after using some."
Hearing that there would be leftover salt, He Tu's face brightened. If there was extra salt, even if her own household didn't have any, she could share it with Da Shan and Da Diao's family. It would be a huge help.
Yan Mo looked at the six bone needles and six wooden needles laid out in front of him. He was satisfied. He could tell He Tu had really thought things through. She had created twelve different needles of various lengths and thicknesses. The thinnest one, made from fishbone, was very similar to modern-day sewing needles.
What impressed him the most were the small knives. Yan Mo had only drawn a scalpel and some commonly used medical tools. He hadn't expected He Tu to follow his drawing and actually produce these small knives. They weren't perfect, but they were incredibly close.
He Tu apologized, "I'm sorry, Xiao Mo. Time was too short. Da Shan, Da Diao, and I couldn't get it exactly how you wanted. The tweezers and forceps you asked for—well, when we tried, they didn't work."
"It's fine. These are enough."
Cao Ting entered through the curtains, speaking in a soft voice, "Master and Master Da Shan have found a good place. My master sent me to ask, can we move Master Da He now?"
"Move everything we need there first."
Cao Ting nodded. "Everything's already been secretly moved. We just need to bring the person over."
"Then let's go."
After hearing the instructions, Cao Ting quickly came inside and helped Yan Mo. He Tu nervously asked if there was anything else she should bring.
