Chapter 2
The back of Yan Mo's neck ached sharply, but the pain in his right leg was far worse.
He was hungry and thirsty, but he dared not make a sound or move to search for food. Not that he could even if he tried—his hands were tied to a stake. The position he was forced into resembled a bizarre prayer, with both hands raised as if in reverence while lying flat on the ground.
The crude thatch barn he found himself in was barely a structure. Its roof, haphazardly patched with hay, allowed faint rays of sunlight to pierce through. The barn was small, about 40 square meters, divided into two rows along a central aisle. Not everything in the rows were humans; some of the spaces were occupied by animals. The foul stench that permeated the air was almost unbearable, the kind of odor that could make anyone retch.
When Yan Mo first woke, he foolishly thought he had been saved. But as the events around him unfolded, that hope vanished.
Just half an hour earlier, another man had been tied to a stake just two feet away. The man was gravely injured, with blood oozing from a head wound. He had been moaning faintly but hadn't regained consciousness.
Then, a burly man with a slightly protruding belly had entered the barn. His heavy footsteps echoed as he surveyed the space before stopping next to the injured man. Without hesitation, he kicked the man hard, eliciting no reaction. Satisfied, the burly man untied him and dragged him out by the arm.
Yan Mo lay near the outermost edge of the barn, allowing him a limited view of the outside if he turned his head.
Outside, a small plaza stretched out before him. At its center stood a large wooden stake, its top crowned with a heavy axe.
Around the plaza, people moved busily. Some wove grass into mats or ropes, while others cooked or prepared food.
When the burly man entered the barn earlier, Yan Mo had considered begging for a sip of water or, if he dared to hope, a bowl of rice. But the cold, pitiless look on the man's face silenced him.
The burly man dragged the unconscious man to the center of the plaza. With practiced ease, he placed the man's head on the wooden stake and reached for the axe.
Yan Mo's heart began to race uncontrollably.
Without hesitation, the man raised the axe and brought it down in a clean, brutal arc.
The unconscious man's head separated from his body in an instant, blood spraying across the ground.
The men and women around the plaza barely reacted. They glanced at the scene but quickly returned to their tasks as though nothing had happened.
As a doctor, Yan Mo had seen his share of blood and death. But this was different. The cold detachment of the onlookers and the sheer brutality of the act nearly made him scream. Instead, he froze, holding his breath, terrified of drawing attention.
The burly man worked methodically, dismembering the body and discarding the unwanted organs. The usable meat was sliced into pieces, divided into three wooden tubs, and carried off by other workers. The inedible parts—the intestines and other organs—were brought back to the barn and thrown to the carnivorous animals.
Yan Mo clenched his teeth, suppressing the urge to vomit. The throbbing pain in his neck and head grew almost unbearable.
As the burly man passed by, his gaze locked onto Yan Mo's horrified eyes. Irritated by the boy's expression, the man deliberately kicked his injured leg.
"AH!" Yan Mo cried out in pain, his body writhing as flies and mosquitoes swarmed around him.
Satisfied, the burly man walked away, leaving the barn. The faint sounds of labor from outside drifted in.
