The evening sky over New Rome was painted in hues of gold and purple, the air heavy with the scent of blooming flowers. After an intense day of training, you found yourself on one of the quieter balconies of the Senate House. The city stretched out below, alive but calm, a stark contrast to the whirlwind of thoughts in your head.

You leaned against the railing, lost in your own musings, when a familiar voice broke the silence.

“You’re hard to avoid, you know.”

You turned, your heart skipping a beat as you spotted Reyna standing in the doorway. She looked composed as always, but there was something softer about her tonight—her posture less rigid, her expression less guarded.

“And yet, you keep trying,” you teased, offering her a small smile.

Reyna sighed, stepping out onto the balcony and leaning against the railing beside you. For a moment, neither of you spoke, the silence filled only by the distant hum of the city below.

“Why do you do this?” she asked finally, her voice quiet.

“Do what?”

“Keep pushing,” she said, turning her gaze to meet yours. “You could’ve walked away earlier. It would’ve been easier—for both of us.”

You held her gaze, your expression softening. “Maybe. But I don’t want easy, Reyna. I want you.”

Her breath hitched slightly, and she looked away, her fingers tightening on the railing. “You don’t know what you’re asking for.”

“Don’t I?” you asked, taking a small step closer. “Reyna, I know you—better than anyone else here. I know how strong you are, how much you carry on your shoulders. I also know you don’t have to do it alone.”

She shook her head, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. “And what? You think you’re the one who’s going to save me?”

“I’m not trying to save you,” you said, your voice firm. “I’m just trying to stand beside you.”

Reyna turned to you then, her eyes searching yours, as if trying to find some trace of insincerity. But when she didn’t find it, the tension in her shoulders eased, if only slightly.

“You’re impossible,” she said softly, but there was no venom in her words this time—just a faint note of affection.

“And yet, here you are,” you replied, grinning.

Reyna rolled her eyes, but the faint smile that tugged at her lips gave her away. “You’re insufferable,” she murmured.

“And you like me anyway,” you shot back, stepping closer until there was barely any space between you.

She didn’t respond right away, her gaze flicking between your eyes and your lips as if debating her next move. Finally, with a resigned sigh, she reached up, her hand brushing against your cheek as she leaned in.

The kiss was soft at first, hesitant, as though she wasn’t entirely sure she was ready to let her walls down. But as you gently cupped her face, deepening the kiss, she melted into it, her other hand gripping the front of your shirt to steady herself.

When you finally pulled away, her cheeks were flushed, and for the first time, she looked at a loss for words.

“Still want me to consider it?” you asked, your voice barely above a whisper.

Reyna huffed out a soft laugh, shaking her head. “You’re lucky I tolerate you.”

You grinned, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. “And you’re lucky I’m too stubborn to give up on you.”

For once, she didn’t argue, instead leaning her forehead against yours with a quiet smile. “Don’t make me regret this.”

“Never,” you promised, sealing it with another kiss as the stars began to dot the evening sky.
