Akshat returned home in the evening, exhausted from the day, but the sight before him startled him. Amrit was sitting at the dining table, eating a bowl of Maggi. His eyes widened in alarm, and he rushed toward the kitchen, fearing the worst. Opening the kitchen door, he scanned the area. Thankfully, apart from a burned pan, the kitchen was intact. He let out a relieved sigh before walking back into the living room.

“You could’ve called me. I would’ve brought something,” he said gently, watching her finish her Maggi.

She didn’t respond, calmly drank her water, and stood up to place the plate in the sink. As she turned to walk away, Akshat reached out and held her hand, stopping her.

“Amrit, please talk to me,” he pleaded, his voice laced with guilt.

“Nahi karna,” she replied curtly, trying to wriggle her hand free.

He tightened his grip slightly and pulled her closer. She stumbled, her body colliding with his chest.

“Akshat, chhodiye yaar,” she muttered, wriggling in his grasp.

He brushed a strand of her hair off her face, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’m sorry.”

Amrit pushed him away lightly, her expression a mix of frustration and sadness.

“Kya sorry? Sorry se kya hoga?” she shot back, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Akshat froze, guilt clawing at him as her emotions spilled out.

“Akshat, maine aaj tak kabhi kisi drama, kisi competition mein participate nahi kiya,” she began, her voice trembling. “Not even in a debate competition, even when I wanted to. Because I was always afraid—afraid that people would judge me. But this time…” She paused, her voice cracking.

“You said I should participate. You encouraged me. I participated because I thought you believed in me. Do you even know how hard it is for an introvert like me? I pushed aside my awkwardness, my nervousness, everything—because I trusted you.”

Her tears began to flow freely now, and Akshat’s heart ached seeing her like this.

“But mujhe kya pata tha…” she continued, her voice breaking, “that from everyone, you would be the one to criticize me. Agar bura lagta, toh pehle hi keh dete. I would’ve understood. But when I was so excited, when I felt for the first time like I could overcome my fears, you shattered my confidence completely.”

Akshat stood a few steps away, guilt written all over his face. He couldn’t take it anymore. Slowly, he approached her, each step heavy with regret.

Without saying a word, he placed one hand on the back of her head and the other on her back, pulling her into his embrace. His hold was firm, protective, as if he was shielding her from all the hurt he had caused.
