Hearts in Tune 13

“Soft launch you mean?” Aminu watched as her eyes lit up with the recognition of her mispronunciation of the word before she burst out laughing. He watched her laugh heartily for a few seconds before he set a glass of water near her hand, he knew with the intensity of her laughter, she would need it very much.

She downed the glass slowly, her laughter slowly coming to a halt. “I had no idea it had a specific name, who knew it was ‘soft launch’.” It was now Aminu’s turn to laugh because the face of confusion he had made when his Gen-Z social media intern was explaining was just like hers.

“According to my young, social media intern, there’s a soft launch and there’s a hard launch. Soft launch is just letting people know there’s someone as we've just done, hard launch however, is if we just posted our wedding invitation to one of the blogs.” Her face spread into a look of understanding as he explained. A man in a black kaftan whizzed by downstairs and it made Aminu remember a question he itched to ask her.

“Why’s your relationship with your brother so bad? He nearly hit you the other day.” Her watched as her good mood died out and a mask took over her face. If he wasn’t watching her so closely, he would have missed it because there was still a fake smile spread on her lips.

"It is okay if you don't want to talk about it. I just want to know how to deal with him going on, especially as we're going to be close family." He watched as she waved off his concern with the fake smile now slipping off her face. Aminu wondered what could have soured their relationship so badly.

“It wasn’t always so bad. For years, it was the usual first son of the family that I must respect because he’s my brother, but as time went on, my father began to compare me to him. All my wins became compared to Sa'ad's, my failures held to the standard ge had set. You know I had to be jealous and I was irrevocably so." She looked out the glass window that overlooked the courtyard where other patrons were coming and going.

"Then I worked hard to match him. He was head boy in his year and I worked hard myself till I was head girl in my set as well. It seemed like healthy competition until he began to resent me for getting the things he got. My mother would do her best to buy me whatever my father bought Sa'ad for his wins. He would destroy the things I got, I felt like he didn't do them intentionally until one day, I heard him tell Mami that he had no idea why I had to have the same things as he did." Aminu nodded his head, urging her to continue but it still did not explain their relationship being so bad.

"He started to spiral because I worked hard to match him. At uni, I topped my class every year, then his partying started. Sa'ad is one very smart man so he cannot fail even if he doesn't read. He partied his nights and days away but I had to work so hard for those things, those things he got on a platter.

To punish him, my father made me head of our thread distribution company just freshly out of uni. The company grew in leaps and bounds because I truly enjoyed the work. When we clocked about two hundred million at the end of my first year of takeover, my father was finally impressed with me, Sa'ad asked to take over to show he could do even better." He watched her hands shake as she  held the napkin on her plate, if it was a tissue, she would have torn it to pieces.
