At night, the streets of Seoul were always quiet, ignoring the rats mousing around the wetted floor where their little home was. Eden could almost listen into their conversations from the quietness of the street, every time she would pass them, the small tteokbokki cart from the old lady she would always have a conversation with, was there, waiting for her.
Eden enjoyed eating tteokbokki, eating it everyday because you felt bad no one was buying from the old lady was another thing. Some days, she would come back from a school lunch and still buy food from her, just to please her.
"Eden!"
With a small sigh, Eden walked towards the old lady. She felt bad for her, she was sure she was the only person in the neighborhood who would eat something.
"Miss Kim." she smiled at the old lady.
The lady re arranged a chair for the young woman to seat, making her nod with a smile and take the seat. "i was beginning to think you weren't going to come." she giggled, "i'm happy you did."
"you know i always come late at night," Eden smiled. "i've had some late classes, that's all."
"not to worry," she said as she served Eden a small plate with tteokbokki and kimchi on the side.
Eden thanked her and began eating in silence. "I'll have to take this home, though." She said after a small bite, "my aunt is always telling me to come home early because it's been dangerous outside lately."
"I've heard about it." Miss Kim whispered, "It's the loan sharks most of the time." She added in a hush.
"Loan sharks, huh?" Eden repeated, her stare going blank. Miss Kim nodded, making the young woman nod in exchange, closing her plate to take it with here. "Can I have a bag, please?"
Miss Kim nodded and quickly gave her one.
"Thank you, Miss Kim. Have a good night." She smiled at her before walking away.
Once it was just darkness in the alley, she started making her way to the station. Her thought began to blur as she began to think of what happened just a few months ago.
"Momma? Papa?" The voice of the twenty year old, Eden Seung-Hyun, said as she pushed the opened door to her house.
She looked down to her feet and stumbled with an unfamiliar pair of shoes, man shoes, to be precise. She gulped and looked up, hearing grunts from her parent's bedroom. She put down her stuff and quickly rushed to their bedroom, opening the door to see her mother lying on the floor in a puddle of blood and a man hitting the body of her father.
"Oh my God!" She screamed as a reaction.
The man turned around and saw the young girl with horror plastered on her face, he quickly stood up and rushed to her, making her react quickly as she rushed to the door, but too slow that he caught her, he pushed her onto the door and placed the gun directly on her chin.
