THE HUM OF FLUORESCENT LIGHTS BUZZED FAINTLY OVERHEAD AS ADRIANA STARED DOWNAT HER OPEN TEXTBOOK, the words blurring together into meaningless shapes. the classroom was quiet, save for the occasional scrape of a chair or the soft rustle of paper. it should've been peaceful, should've been the perfect environment to focus, but adriana's mind was anywhere but on her homework.
she tapped her pencil against the edge of her desk, her knee bouncing restlessly under the table. across the room, cecelia sat with her chin propped in her hand, twirling a strand of hair around her finger while she scrolled through her phone under the desk.
