Ibukun (pronounced ib-uh-Koon)
A feminine name of Yoruba origin.
It means "blessing."
Cries echoed through the hospital room.
"Congratulations, it's a beautiful baby girl," the doctor announced with a smile, handing the newborn to her mother.
Tears welled up in the woman's eyes as she held the tiny life close to her chest. Her husband stood nearby, his heart gripped by fear—fear that he might lose the love of his life after childbirth. But as he looked at their daughter, that fear faded into awe.
He walked over, unable to look away from the little miracle wrapped in soft blankets.
"What should we name her?" he asked gently.
"Deborah," the mother said, her voice tender, eyes fixed on her child. "But her middle name will be Ibukun... because she is our little blessing."
That was the first time they saw me.
And it would be the last.
