The afternoon sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the worn-out benches at the park. For hours, the Matsuno brothers had searched every corner of the neighborhood-alleys, rooftops, bus stops, even the edge of town. And yet, they had found nothing. Now they sat slouched in silence, a rare stillness cloaking the usual chaos between them.
Osomatsu ran a hand through his hair, his voice edged with frustration.
Osomatsu (frustrated): "I can't believe we couldn't find him."
Choromatsu sat hunched forward, elbows on his knees, his expression hollow.
Choromatsu (somber): "We've checked everywhere. The parks, the streets, even the bus station. It's like he vanished."
Ichimatsu stared blankly at the grass, arms folded tight across his chest.
Ichimatsu (flat): "We were too late. He could be anywhere by now."
Karamatsu leaned back against the bench, his usual bravado nowhere in sight.
Karamatsu (quiet): "This is our fault. We pushed him too far."
For once, even Jyushimatsu was still. He sat quietly on the ground, eyes low and voice small.
Jyushimatsu (hesitant): "Do you think... he hates us?"
Todomatsu let out a slow, bitter breath, his usual perkiness dulled by guilt.
Todomatsu (softly): "I don't know if he hates us... but I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to come back."
Their thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps crunching across the grass. They looked up to see Totoko approaching, arms crossed tightly over her chest, her expression unreadable.
Totoko (sharp): "What are you guys doing just sitting around? You look like someone ran over your dog."
Osomatsu quickly straightened up, trying to wear his usual grin, but it faltered under Totoko's unimpressed gaze.
Osomatsu (nervous): "Oh, Totoko-chan, we're just... taking a break."
Totoko raised an eyebrow and stepped closer, her eyes scanning each of them.
Totoko (demanding): "Where's Haruto? I thought he'd be with you."
The air stiffened.
The brothers exchanged uneasy glances before Osomatsu finally answered, voice low.
Osomatsu (guilty): "He ran away."
Totoko's expression shifted immediately-shock giving way to anger.
Totoko (angry): "What?! Why?!"
Choromatsu looked down, unable to meet her eyes.
Choromatsu (regretful): "We had a fight last night. Said things we shouldn't have. He lost control... and then he was gone."
Totoko took a step back, her jaw tight.
Totoko (disappointed): "So your adopted brother-who's already been through hell-ran away... because of you?"
Todomatsu opened his mouth but quickly shut it again.
Todomatsu (defensive): "It's not like we wanted this to happen..."
Totoko's voice was cold now.
Totoko (sharp): "Doesn't matter what you wanted. He's out there alone. You six were supposed to be his family."
The silence that followed was suffocating. None of them had an excuse.
Totoko exhaled, rubbing her temples.
