The air in the shared bedroom was thick with stillness, broken only by the slow, pained groans of brothers waking one by one. The sunlight streamed faintly through the shoji window, catching the disarray—blankets tossed aside, shelves knocked over, and books scattered across the floor.
Ichimatsu sat up first, clutching his head with a grimace. His body ached from the impact, but it wasn't the bruises that hurt—it was the memory.
Ichimatsu (low, groggy): "...Haruto."
Karamatsu stirred next, blinking through the headache as he sat up and looked around.
Karamatsu (quietly): "We... passed out, didn't we?"
Osomatsu rubbed his sore shoulder, slowly rising from where he had been thrown against the wall.
Osomatsu (confused): "What... happened last night?"
Choromatsu sat on the floor, arms wrapped around his knees. He didn't answer right away. Todomatsu's lips trembled as he whispered:
Todomatsu (quiet): "He snapped."
Jyushimatsu remained seated on his futon, unusually quiet. His hands shook slightly as he looked around the room that still echoed with the memory of their youngest brother's fury.
Choromatsu (softly): "We pushed him too far."
Ichimatsu (flat, but guilty): "He didn't run away. We drove him out."
The weight of that truth sank into all six of them like a heavy stone. Haruto was gone. And the silence left behind felt more suffocating than any of his psychic powers.
From downstairs, the faint sound of someone crying drifted through the floorboards.
Todomatsu (uneasy): "Is that... Mom?"
A moment later, their father's deep voice erupted, cutting through the air like a blade.
Matsuzō (booming): "GET DOWN HERE! NOW!"
The brothers scrambled to their feet, hearts pounding as they descended the stairs. None of them dared speak as they entered the living room.
Matsuyo sat on the couch, her eyes red, face pale, and her hands clutching a folded note. Her shoulders trembled as tears slipped silently down her cheeks. Standing beside her was their father—stone-faced, arms crossed, radiating anger like fire from a furnace.
Jyushimatsu (softly): "What... what's going on?"
Matsuyo didn't speak. She simply held out the paper.
Osomatsu took it with trembling hands and opened the note. His eyes scanned the neat, careful handwriting, and he began to read aloud, his voice growing more strained with every word.
Osomatsu (reading): "To my family,
I'm sorry for what I've done. I never wanted to hurt anyone, but I couldn't stay after last night. I've tried so hard to fit in, but I know I'll never be enough for this family. Please don't come looking for me. I'll figure things out on my own.
-Haruto
Silence fell like a hammer. Choromatsu's breath hitched. Karamatsu lowered his head. Todomatsu looked away.
Matsuzō stepped forward, his voice sharp and cold.
Matsuzō (stern): "Do you finally understand what you've done? You broke him."
Osomatsu (defensive): "We didn't mean to—"
Matsuzō (cutting him off): "Meaning doesn't matter! What you did was push him to the edge—treating him like an outsider, like he had to earn a place in this family."
Matsuyo's voice trembled, but there was pain behind every word.
Matsuyo (tearfully): "He's been adopted six times. Six. Every single one ended with rejection. Fear. Isolation. All because of his powers."
She looked at them, eyes filled with disappointment.
Matsuyo (broken): "We were supposed to be different. I wanted to give him a home where he was loved. Where he didn't have to hide. But you... you made him feel like he was just another test to pass."
Todomatsu (quietly): "We didn't know..."
Matsuyo (shaking her head): "No. You didn't. And now he's gone."
Matsuzō stepped in, his tone final and commanding.
Matsuzō (harsh): "You're not stepping back into this house until you bring him home. I don't care how long it takes—find him. That's an order."
The brothers stood in stunned silence, the weight of guilt heavier than anything they had ever known.
Karamatsu (quietly): "But... where do we even begin?"
Matsuzō (firm): "You're his brothers. If you don't know where he'd go, then start figuring it out."
Without another word, the six brothers scattered. They didn't argue. They didn't complain.
They just... went.
Osomatsu checked the park where he and Haruto once sat sharing snacks.
Osomatsu (calling out): "Haruto! Come on, kid, where are you?!"
Karamatsu searched the busier streets, his usual confidence stripped away.
Karamatsu (pleading): "Have you seen a boy wearing glasses? About this tall... quiet. Please."
Choromatsu knocked on doors, his voice trembling with every explanation.
Choromatsu (earnest): "He's been missing since last night. If you've seen him... anything would help."
Ichimatsu crept through alleyways and hidden corners, his voice barely above a whisper.
Ichimatsu (sincere): "You don't have to come out... just let me know you're okay."
Jyushimatsu dashed across town with frantic energy, calling loudly into every open space.
Jyushimatsu (worried): "Haruto!! Please answer! We're sorry!"
Todomatsu stopped at every café, every corner shop, asking between tight lips and eyes filled with regret.
Todomatsu (gently): "Glasses, black hair, quiet voice... Have you seen him?"
As the sun dipped below the horizon, they returned to the bridge. Their faces were pale, exhausted. The bridge stood silent. So did they.
Osomatsu (frustrated): "Nothing. No sign of him. Anywhere."
Choromatsu (guilt-ridden): "We broke him. I think... I think he really believed we didn't want him."
Ichimatsu (quiet): "We never gave him a chance."
Todomatsu (softly): "And now... he might never come back."
A long pause fell over them, the sounds of the river filling the emptiness.
Osomatsu clenched his fists, his voice hoarse but unwavering.
Osomatsu (firm): "No. We'll find him. I don't care if it takes days, weeks, whatever. He's our brother. And we won't lose him."
The brothers stared ahead, the stars just beginning to blink into the sky. And beneath that fading light, they made a silent vow.
