The early afternoon sun filtered softly through the trees, bathing the neighborhood in a warm, golden hue. A gentle breeze whispered through the leaves, brushing against Haruto's cheeks as he stood alone on the rooftop of the Matsuno household. It was quiet—eerily peaceful, considering the usual noise from the brothers below. For now, he welcomed the silence.
Haruto's hazel eyes were distant, fixated on nothing in particular as the guilt from the previous day gnawed at him. The moment with Jyushimatsu replayed in his mind like a broken reel.
Haruto (guilt-ridden): I shouldn't have done that... I let my emotions get the better of me.
He clenched his hands tightly, still remembering the look on Jyushimatsu's face after falling from his jump. The guilt hit deeper than he expected. He hadn't meant to hurt anyone. And yet... he had.
Suddenly, a familiar voice broke through his thoughts.
Totoko (brightly): Oh, Haruto!
He turned around, startled, to see Totoko making her way toward him, a grocery bag in one hand and her usual radiant smile lighting up her face. Her steps were casual, yet graceful, as if the breeze itself was moving with her.
Haruto (calmly): Good afternoon, Totoko-san.
His posture eased slightly at the sight of her. But before she could say another word, Haruto turned and darted down the rooftop stairs, something in his heart pulling him toward her, as if this was the moment he needed more than anything.
Downstairs, the brothers barely had time to react.
Osomatsu (curious): Haruto, where are you going?
Haruto (hesitant): Umm... Totoko? That's her name, right?
The brothers exchanged confused looks. Osomatsu folded his arms with a teasing grin.
Osomatsu (teasing): Ohhh, going off to see Totoko, huh? Just don't do anything suspicious.
Before another word could be said, Haruto dashed past them and out the door.
Karamatsu (dramatic): Such a mysterious youth, running into the sunlight... Oh wait. That sounded kind of cool. Forget I said that.
Choromatsu (annoyed): Karamatsu, shut up!
Meanwhile, Totoko was already near the sidewalk, waiting. When Haruto reached her, she raised an eyebrow.
Totoko (curious): What's the rush? Escaping your brothers?
Haruto (chuckling lightly): Something like that. But actually... I needed to talk to someone. Someone who would actually listen.
Totoko's smile softened. She could tell by his tone this wasn't a casual visit.
Totoko (concerned): You seem off. What's bothering you?
Haruto (quietly): Totoko-san... I need to tell you something. About what happened with Jyushimatsu.
Her playful expression faded into something more serious. She gave him her full attention and nodded slowly.
Totoko (softly): Go on. I'm listening.
Haruto (confessing): I used my powers. During his test, I—I snapped. He pushed me too far, and I got desperate. I stopped time and... twisted his ankle just enough to make him feel what I felt. It wasn't right. I shouldn't have done it.
Totoko blinked, caught off guard by the confession. Her lips pressed into a thin line as she looked away briefly, processing. For a moment, she wondered if the brothers were unintentionally breaking Haruto—emotionally grinding him down without realizing it.
Totoko (quietly): They really pushed you that far, huh?
Haruto didn't answer right away. Instead, he just looked at her, eyes distant.
Totoko gave a small nod, then gestured for him to follow.
Totoko (gently): Let's take a walk. Clear your head a bit.
The two walked side by side down the quiet path behind the houses. Haruto remained quiet, grateful for Totoko's calm presence.
Totoko (nudging him): You're being too hard on yourself. Look, Jyushimatsu's a good guy, but sometimes he's all energy and no awareness. You didn't act out of cruelty. You snapped, yeah—but you're human. Well... mostly.
Haruto (blinking): Mostly?
Totoko (grinning): With powers like that? You're practically a superhero. I mean—lifting time and twisting ankles with a blink? Come on.
Haruto (embarrassed): I wouldn't go that far...
Totoko (playfully): Well, you're definitely cooler than your brothers. That's not saying much, though.
Haruto chuckled softly, the tension in his chest easing just a little.
As they reached a shaded street lined with old trees, Totoko pointed ahead.
Totoko (frowning): That tree looks like it's about to fall.
One of the large trees had its roots jutting out from the sidewalk, its thick trunk leaning ominously over the path. Haruto stepped forward, scanning the scene.
Totoko (concerned): If that comes down, someone's getting hurt for sure.
Haruto looked around, making sure no one was nearby.
Haruto (softly): Totoko-san... stay still.
Totoko (confused): What are you—
Her words cut short as the tree slowly lifted, roots dangling midair. A glowing blue psychic aura shimmered around Haruto's fingers—gentle and controlled. It was the first time his sub ability, Telekinesis, made a true appearance.
Totoko's eyes widened in awe as she watched the massive trunk shift and settle safely back into the ground. Haruto's expression remained focused, his hands steady as he gently pressed the roots back into place. After ensuring it was stable, he exhaled deeply and let the aura fade.
Totoko (breathless): You just... you lifted a tree.
Haruto (adjusting his glasses): I didn't want anyone to get hurt.
Totoko stepped closer, still stunned.
Totoko (softly): That was incredible. I mean it. Do you even realize how special you are?
Haruto (rubbing the back of his neck): I didn't do it for attention. I just... wanted to help.
Totoko placed a hand gently on his shoulder.
Totoko (warmly): And that's why you're different. You help because it's who you are—not because you want something back.
A few yards away, hidden poorly behind a bush, the Matsuno brothers were stacked on top of each other, eavesdropping—again.
Osomatsu (whispering): Haruto and Totoko are getting way too close.
Todomatsu (curious): Do you think it's a date?
Choromatsu (snapping): It's not a date! They're just talking!
Jyushimatsu (bouncing in place): Talking can turn into dating!
The bush rustled, making them duck in panic. When they peeked again, Haruto and Totoko were walking away together, their laughter blending with the soft breeze.
Osomatsu (groaning): Ugh, what did we miss this time?
Todomatsu (shrugging): Probably something important. Again.
But Haruto didn't care about their antics. For once, he wasn't overwhelmed. With Totoko at his side and the blue aura still faintly warm around his fingertips, he felt lighter and understood.
