The Matsuno household was buzzing with restless energy. After a long morning of teasing and chaos, it was Karamatsu's turn to declare his test for Haruto. The second-oldest brother, always dramatic and loud in his attempts to stand out, had been suspiciously quiet—until now.
Karamatsu (striking a pose): Haruto! It is time.
Haruto, who had just finished a heartfelt talk with Matsuzō about family and belonging, barely had time to process the words before he was swept into the living room.
The other brothers were already sprawled across the couch, all too eager to watch whatever ridiculous spectacle Karamatsu had prepared.
Karamatsu slid on a pair of shiny sunglasses with a flourish, posing like a model caught in a slow-motion breeze—though there was none. He held a guitar case in one hand, his other hand placed gallantly on his hip.
Karamatsu (confident): Today, you shall embark on a journey of discovery! A path paved with rhythm, confidence, and pure Karamatsu soul! Welcome... to The Karamatsu Test!
Haruto (polite): Alright... what exactly do I have to do?
Karamatsu flung open his guitar case and pulled out a classic blue acoustic guitar.
Karamatsu (proudly): You and I, dear brother, shall perform a live street concert. A duet of destiny! Music, energy, and passion! All eyes will be on us!
The room immediately exploded into laughter.
Osomatsu (grinning): Oh no... this is going to be painful in the best way.
Ichimatsu (smirking): I'll bring popcorn.
Todomatsu (filming): Wait, this might actually be great content. I'm posting this.
Haruto, still smiling, adjusted his glasses with a light sigh.
Haruto (calm): I'm not much of a performer, but... I'll give it my best.
Karamatsu (cheerful): That's the spirit! Let the world hear our brotherly bond!
By late afternoon, the two stood in the town square, where Karamatsu set up under a blooming tree bathed in sunlight. Curious onlookers had already started to gather, drawn in by Karamatsu's loud warmups and overconfident strumming.
Haruto stood beside him, tambourine in hand, trying to hide his nerves.
Karamatsu (encouraging): Now, Haruto! Let your charisma bloom! Follow my rhythm, and the people shall be yours!
Karamatsu launched into an overly emotional original ballad—something about heartbreak, stardust, and forgotten sunglasses. Haruto tapped his tambourine awkwardly at first, but then slowly began syncing with the beat. He felt awkward... but oddly free.
Claps came sporadically from the growing crowd. Some passersby giggled, others watched with amused interest. Still, Haruto pressed on—his rhythm gaining confidence with each beat.
Karamatsu (shouting mid-song): Beautiful! Now add some flair!
Haruto hesitated for a second. Then he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. With a short hop and a rhythmic shake of the tambourine, he added a tiny bounce to his step. The crowd responded with scattered applause.
But just as things began to feel comfortable—
Disaster struck.
Haruto leapt forward to match one of Karamatsu's sweeping guitar flourishes. His foot caught on a loose stone beneath the pavement. His balance shifted. The tambourine slipped from his grasp.
Time seemed to slow.
Without thinking, Haruto flicked his wrist. A quiet pulse of psychic energy rippled around him. The crowd froze mid-blink. Karamatsu hung mid-strum. The tambourine hovered, suspended in the air like a leaf caught in a paused breeze.
Haruto reached forward calmly, caught it, planted his feet firmly on the ground, and allowed time to resume.
The final chord rang out from Karamatsu's guitar.
The crowd clapped.
None the wiser.
Karamatsu (grinning): You've got flair, Haruto!
He bowed grandly, basking in the applause. Haruto wiped a bead of sweat from his temple, trying not to let the relief show on his face.
Osomatsu (cackling): I can't believe he didn't trip! That would've been a classic Karamatsu performance moment!
Todomatsu (checking his phone): Too bad. But hey, the crowd actually liked it.
Haruto kept his usual calm smile, though his heart was still racing.
Haruto (deadpan): Just... lucky, I guess.
As they packed up, Karamatsu placed a dramatic hand on Haruto's shoulder.
Karamatsu (proudly): You, my dear brother, have proven your spirit today. You danced through danger, held your ground, and made music with your heart. Truly... you were born for the stage.
Haruto (softly): Thanks, Karamatsu. That was... something I'll never forget.
The rest of the brothers emerged from behind a nearby tree, snickering and teasing.
Osomatsu (grinning): You survived the Karamatsu Special. You might be stronger than I thought.
Ichimatsu (deadpan): Most people would've faked an injury just to end the song early.
As the sun dipped lower on the horizon, Haruto walked back home beside his brothers—tired, a little embarrassed.
