The Matsuno household had fallen into a rare stillness that evening. After days of chaos and tests that left Haruto mentally and physically drained, the six older brothers finally—miraculously—agreed to give him a break. Haruto had retreated quietly into his room, grateful for the pause. Meanwhile, the rest of the brothers slipped out of the house in search of food and distraction.
Their destination, as always, was Chibita's oden cart.
It sat beneath a flickering streetlamp on the corner, steam rising from the large metal pot as the scent of soy broth and simmered daikon filled the cool night air. Chibita stood behind the cart with his usual scowl, ladle in hand.
Chibita (muttering): Great. The freeloaders are back.
Osomatsu (grinning): Come on, Chibita, don't be like that. You love us. Admit it.
Chibita (snapping): The only thing I love is when you losers actually pay for your food! Now, what do you want?
Jyushimatsu (cheerful): We'll take the usual! Let's GOOOOO!!
He bounced on his stool, practically vibrating with excitement. Chibita grumbled as he ladled portions into bowls, the scowl deepening with every passing minute. The brothers, as carefree as ever, devoured their food between jokes and bursts of laughter, completely unaware of the tension building behind the counter.
Until suddenly—
Chibita (barking): Alright, that's enough!
The laughter stopped. All six froze mid-bite, chopsticks paused in midair. Even Ichimatsu's cat, lounging nearby, leapt away as Chibita slammed a bowl down harder than necessary.
Osomatsu (confused): Uh... something wrong, Chibita?
Chibita (dangerously): You six are what's wrong.
He leaned over the cart, pointing his ladle square at Osomatsu's face.
Chibita (snapping): I've been hearing how you've been treating that new kid—Haruto. And I've got a few things to say.
The brothers blinked, puzzled glances bouncing between them.
Choromatsu (defensive): What's the big deal? Haruto's fine. We're just messing around. He can take it.
Karamatsu (proud): He's proven himself—resilient, stoic, and stylish. A true Matsuno brother!
Chibita (furious): Are you six seriously this dense?! That kid's been with you for a couple days and you've already dumped enough chaos on him to break most people. Tests, teasing, non-stop noise—it's too much!
Osomatsu (shrugging): C'mon, it's all in good fun. Haruto knows we're just playing around.
Chibita (firm): Playing around? You're pushing him to his limit! Do you even realize what kind of person you've got in that house? Or are you too selfish to see it?
The words hit like a brick wall. Even Choromatsu looked down, sheepishly rubbing his neck.
Choromatsu (awkward): Chibita... are you okay? You're sounding kinda emotional.
Chibita (snapping): Emotional?! You want emotional?! Try watching a quiet, kind kid like him throw himself into every ridiculous thing you demand and still smile through it. He's trying his best to belong, and what do you do? Treat him like a lab rat in your twisted family initiation game!
A silence fell over the cart.
Chibita (lowering his voice): He's not like you. He's not lazy, selfish, or loud. He's better than all of you combined. And if you don't start treating him like a real brother, you're going to lose the best thing that's ever happened to your family.
For once, Osomatsu didn't have a comeback. He stared at the broth quietly, his usual grin nowhere in sight.
Ichimatsu (softly): He hasn't said anything. So... maybe he's okay with it?
Chibita (flat): No, he's just polite. That's the problem. He doesn't want to be a burden, so he stays quiet. But you're not listening.
Jyushimatsu (tilting his head): So... what do we do, Chibita?
Chibita let out a long sigh, the fire in his eyes dimming just a bit.
Chibita (firm): You don't have to baby him. Just treat him like a brother—not a joke. He's not a guest anymore. He's one of you. Respect him. Let him know he belongs... or you'll break him without even noticing.
The silence that followed was heavier than usual. For once, the six brothers weren't bouncing off each other with witty retorts or loud gags. They simply sat there—quiet, thoughtful.
Osomatsu (quiet): You know... you're not wrong.
Chibita (crossing his arms): Of course I'm not. Just think about it. You six have your flaws, but I know you've got hearts under all that idiocy. Don't waste this chance.
After the Oden visit, they stepped inside the house quietly. The usual noise returned slowly, like background static coming back after silence. But it was different now. Muted. Toned down.
Then, in a whisper:
Jyushimatsu (curious): So... what do we tell Haruto about what Chibita said?
Osomatsu (grinning): Don't worry. We'll just say Chibita told us to throw him a surprise party. He'll never know.
Ichimatsu (smirking): Yeah. Nothing bonds brothers like more chaos.
They all chuckled lightly. The mood lifted just a little as they wandered toward the kitchen, already throwing half-baked ideas around.
But what they didn't know—just above them—was Haruto. Sitting on the steps near the top of the staircase, hidden from view. He had heard everything.
His eyes softened, and the smallest smile curved on his lips.
Haruto (to himself, quietly): A surprise party? Sure. I'll believe it when I see it.
