The Matsuno household had settled into a rare moment of uneasy calm—the kind that always felt like a ticking bomb. The six brothers were scattered throughout the living room, each absorbed in their own bizarre routines.
Osomatsu lay slouched on the couch, a pillow resting over his face like the world was too much to deal with. Choromatsu flipped through a magazine while muttering half-baked goals to himself. Karamatsu stood by the window, locked in a self-imagined dramatic moment, waiting for a breeze that would never come. Ichimatsu sat cross-legged on the floor, absently scratching a smug-looking cat behind the ears. Jyushimatsu bounced a baseball off the wall in a rhythm that made the floor vibrate, and Todomatsu scrolled through his phone, somehow completely detached from the surrounding madness.
Haruto sat nervously at the edge of the couch, a lukewarm cup of tea cradled in his hands like it might protect him. He had survived Totoko, Choromatsu's idol boot camp, and even Ichimatsu's cat test—but after a full morning immersed in this ever-shifting storm of personalities, exhaustion was creeping in fast.
In the kitchen, Matsuyo and Matsuzō sat across from each other at the table. The hum of the refrigerator was the only background noise as they shared a quiet, serious conversation.
Matsuyo (concerned): I'm worried about Haruto. He's trying so hard to fit in... but the boys can be a bit much. He's not like them. He's gentle. Thoughtful. I don't think he knows how to keep up with their chaos.
Matsuzō (serious): I've been thinking the same thing. He's still new. And this family... six brothers alone is already overwhelming. Throwing him into it all at once? That's a lot, even for someone strong.
Matsuyo (softly): Did you see how tired he looked after going to Totoko's shop? He came back drained. And now they're making him jump through hoops like he has to earn his place.
Matsuzō (frowning): That's what bothers me. He shouldn't have to earn his place. He's already part of the family. But those six... they don't know when to stop.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the living room, followed by shrieking laughter and a familiar voice rising in panic.
Haruto (panicked): Guys! Stop throwing things at me! I'm not your personal dartboard!
In the chaos, Haruto ducked behind a couch cushion as plush toys flew past him. Jyushimatsu cackled gleefully, tossing another stuffed animal with pinpoint speed. Osomatsu hurled a rolled-up sock across the room like a party cannon.
Osomatsu (grinning): Come on, Haruto! Dodge better!
Haruto (exasperated): I am dodging as best I can!
Choromatsu sat in the corner rubbing his temples, muttering as though he were mentally escaping to another dimension.
Choromatsu (irritated): Can't you guys be normal for five minutes?
Ichimatsu (smirking): This is normal. For us, anyway.
Jyushimatsu (cheerful): Haruto! You're doing great! Don't let your guard down!
Karamatsu (dramatic): Fear not, little brother! Your stylish savior is here!
Despite his words, Karamatsu remained rooted to his pose, striking a noble stance while doing absolutely nothing to help.
Haruto (groaning): I don't need saving! I need you all to stop!
Just then, the living room door slid open with force.
Matsuyo (firm): Enough!
The air froze. Even Jyushimatsu stopped mid-throw. All six brothers stiffened as Matsuyo stood in the doorway, her apron slightly wrinkled, her glare cutting sharper than any weapon.
Her eyes swept over the scene: pillows on the floor, plushies in mid-flight, a red-faced Haruto clinging to a couch cushion like it was a life raft.
Matsuyo (stern): This is your first warning. Haruto is part of this family now, and I will not have you treating him like this.
Matsuzō stepped in behind her, arms folded, his voice low but loaded with quiet authority.
Matsuzō (disappointed): She's right. You six think this is all fun and games, but he's still adjusting. If you can't respect that, then you'll answer to me.
The energy in the room deflated. Osomatsu let out a weak chuckle, scratching the back of his head.
Osomatsu (awkward): It's just... you know, brotherly bonding?
Matsuzō (stern): Fine. Then bond without using him as a moving target.
Turning her gaze to Haruto, Matsuyo's tone immediately softened.
Matsuyo (gentle): Are you alright, dear? They didn't hurt you, did they?
Haruto (quickly): I'm fine. Really.
Matsuyo (smiling): You're stronger than I thought.
She turned back to her sons, and her eyes narrowed again.
Matsuyo (firm): But that doesn't mean you get to test his limits. Understood?
All six brothers nodded sheepishly, their energy completely drained under the weight of parental guilt.
Matsuyo stepped out, returning to the kitchen, but Matsuzō lingered a moment longer. He looked at Haruto—still gripping the pillow—and offered a calm nod.
Matsuzō (quietly): You've got more patience than I would in your shoes. Keep standing your ground. You'll be just fine here.
Haruto offered a small smile, touched by the unexpected kindness.
Haruto (softly): Thank you.
As the parents disappeared down the hall, the atmosphere slowly thawed. No one spoke for a few seconds—until Osomatsu, of course, broke the silence.
Osomatsu (grinning): Well, guess we've been officially warned. You've got some guts, Haruto.
Haruto let out a breath and slumped back onto the couch, still holding his cushion like a shield.
Haruto (deadpan): This is literally not how you greet your adopted brother.
