For once, the Matsuno household rested under a calm lull.
No screaming, no crashing furniture, no one being launched into a wall. Just a peaceful afternoon, with most of the brothers scattered throughout the house doing whatever nonsense filled their time. But in the kitchen, away from all the noise, a quieter scene unfolded.
Haruto sat at the table between Matsuyo and Matsuzō, both parents watching him with quiet care. Sunlight filtered through the window, dust motes dancing in the golden light. The gentle warmth contrasted with the tension inside Haruto's chest, where his fingers pressed lightly just above his heart.
He held a ceramic cup between his hands. The tea had long since gone lukewarm, but it was something to grip—something grounding.
Matsuyo (smiling): So, Haruto, how are you finding life with this family?
Haruto hesitated before offering a polite smile.
Haruto (quietly): It's... lively. Definitely lively.
Matsuzō (dry): Lively, huh? That's generous. I'd say chaotic is more accurate.
Haruto let out a faint chuckle. But his fingers involuntarily moved to his chest again. The subtle flick of tension went unnoticed by either parent, both focused on his eyes, not his hands.
Matsuyo (gently): I know they can be a bit much. Those boys have their own way of doing things... and sometimes, they don't realize when they've gone too far.
Matsuzō (nodding): If the tests are overwhelming, you need to speak up. You don't have to just take everything they throw at you because you're new. This is your home now, too.
Haruto looked between them. Their words were kind—soothing, even—but they pressed gently against a wall he wasn't ready to lower. Still, he managed a small nod.
Haruto (softly): I appreciate that. Really. But... I think they're just trying to include me in their own way.
Matsuyo (warmer): They are, dear. But that doesn't mean you have to handle it all by yourself. You've been through enough already, haven't you?
Her words struck deeper than Haruto expected. His grip on the cup tightened, his chest twinging as the Black Heart within pulsed faintly in warning—a silent reminder of what he carried, hidden from everyone.
He forced a breath. And a smile.
Haruto (quietly): Thank you. That means a lot.
Matsuyo and Matsuzō exchanged a glance. A silent understanding passed between them.
Matsuzō (calm): You're part of this family now, Haruto. You don't need to prove anything. If the boys haven't realized that yet, it's their loss.
Matsuyo (tender): And just remember—we're here for you. Always.
Haruto relaxed, just a little. It wasn't a full breath of relief, but it was the closest he'd gotten since stepping into this new house.
Then—
Osomatsu (grinning): Hey, hey, hey! What's this? A secret bonding session without me?
He burst into the kitchen like a one-man parade. Matsuzō's expression hardened.
Matsuzō (stern): Osomatsu, we're just talking. Give him some space.
Osomatsu (waving it off): Nah, he's had enough quiet. C'mon, Haruto! Time to get back to the fun!
Osomatsu grabbed Haruto's arm and tugged him up playfully. Haruto offered a weak smile as he rose, glancing back at the parents with a soft nod.
Haruto (grateful): Thank you again.
As they left the kitchen and the laughter resumed upstairs, Matsuyo's smile faded. She stood still, watching the door close behind them. Matsuzō sat silently beside her, arms crossed.
Matsuzō (grumbling): If they take it too far... something's going to happen. And it'll be on them.
Matsuyo didn't answer immediately. Instead, she leaned in closer. Her voice dropped to a whisper as she leaned toward Matsuzō's ear.
Matsuyo (whispering): I think Haruto's going to change all of them... for the better. That's why I chose him.
Matsuzō's eyes widened. He turned to her in surprise, caught off guard by the quiet intensity in her tone.
Matsuzō (shocked): You...?
She nodded slowly, her voice barely audible.
Matsuyo (softly): He's different. I saw it the moment I met him. He's not spoiled like the others. He's patient. Gentle. Honest. I didn't adopt him just to fill a space in the family... I brought him here because I was tired of watching those six grow without learning. Maybe Haruto's what they've been missing all along.
Matsuzō stared at her, still absorbing her words. His silence lingered for a long moment.
Finally, he nodded once.
They said nothing more. Both of them understood the weight of what they were keeping hidden. They made the decision then and there—not to tell their sons, not yet. Let them find out themselves. Let Haruto show them, without the burden of expectation.
They believed in him. And now, they hoped he could become something more than just the seventh brother.
He could be the one who finally changes them all.
Outside the kitchen, the sound of laughter echoed from upstairs—Haruto's voice among them, a bit more tired, but still present.
And for the first time, Matsuyo allowed herself to hope that maybe—just maybe—their family wasn't falling apart.
