When you open your eyes again, the air feels different. The place around you is strange, almost ethereal. The colors seem muted blue, and the atmosphere feels heavy.
You stand at the center of a long hallway that seems to stretch endlessly in both directions, the walls distorted and uneven, as if they’re shifting beneath your gaze. The lighting is dim, but it’s not quite dark—there’s something unnerving about the way the shadows bend in unnatural directions, pooling at your feet like ink in water.
"What... is this place?" you mutter under your breath, glancing around cautiously, your voice feeling muffled as if the very sound of it doesn’t belong here.
"We are in a Momoria."
You snap your head to the side, startled to find Firefly standing there. You blink in disbelief, your heart skipping a beat. "Firefly? How?" Your voice cracks slightly, still unsure if you’re seeing things correctly.
Firefly’s gaze flits away, avoiding eye contact, her expression tense. "It’s a memory zone. And about me being here... well, that’s something I cannot share with you, sorry." There’s an underlying guilt in her voice, and for a moment, you see a flicker of something unsettling in her eyes, something she’s not telling you.
You don’t push further. Instead, you take a deep breath, feeling the weight of the situation settle on your shoulders. The Penacony quest. This should be happening right now. Right? You’ve played this quest a thousand times in your head, but now, something feels... wrong.
It’s been twenty-ish years or more since you isekai'd here, but your memories are hazy, like smudged ink on paper.
'Don’t give up on me now, brain. Come on…'
A faint sound, distant at first, but growing steadily louder. The hollow, rhythmic thuds of something—or someone—moving through the hall.
You and Firefly exchange a quick, tense glance. The sound stops for a brief moment before it resumes, closer this time, unmistakable, like someone—or something—is walking toward you. The air thickens with the anticipation of something terrible coming.
"We should probably not stay in one place," you murmur, your voice barely above a whisper, though you can already feel your pulse quicken.
Firefly nods, her eyes wide with unease. Without another word, you both start moving forward down the corridor, your footsteps quick but tentative.
That sound—louder, closer, unmistakably behind you. It grows in volume with every passing second, each step echoing through the hallway like thunder. You glance over your shoulder, but there’s nothing there.
The hallway behind you remains empty, but the noise—it’s there, drawing closer with every heartbeat, the footsteps now unmistakably echoing in tandem with your own.
You pause as you remember what is about to happen...
Without warning, you grab Firefly’s hand, pulling her forward. "Run!" you hiss.
Firefly’s grip tightens around your hand, and the two of you break into a sprint. The corridor stretches on endlessly, and yet, no matter how fast you run, the sound only grows louder.
You round a corner—stairs, You race down the stairs, your breath coming in ragged gasps, the footsteps behind you becoming a pounding cacophony.
"A door!" Firefly shouts, the two of you rush forward and push through it, slamming the door shut as quickly as you can, your heart hammering in your chest.
"Phew..." Both of you stand there, panting, trying to calm your racing hearts. You glance at Firefly, your breath still uneven. "Did you see what it was?"
