as she walked across campus toward her next class, her phone buzzed in her pocket, snapping her out of her thoughts. it was a message from bakugo: "you free later? i could use a distraction."
y/n paused for a moment, her heart skipping at the familiar, no-nonsense tone. she couldn't help but smile to herself, feeling that same spark of excitement that had been there since their first coffee. no matter what they'd decided the other day, something told her this was far from over. "yeah, i'm free, but i do have some assignments left to do, so i'm gonna try to get those done. you have after that?"
a few moments later, bakugo's message popped up: "just do it at my place. i've got some work to do, too, so it'll just be us getting stuff done."
y/n smiled, feeling relieved at the prospect of spending more time with him, but also focused on her work. "sounds perfect. i'll head over after class."
by the time the class ended, y/n was already heading toward bakugo's place. as usual, she wasn't quite sure what to expect. he didn't like to overthink things, and neither did she. they'd been keeping things simple—no pressure, no rush. but there was still that unspoken tension between them that neither of them could ignore.
when she arrived, bakugo greeted her at the door, his expression as unreadable as ever. "you ready to get to work?" he asked, stepping aside to let her in.
y/n nodded, slipping off her shoes and following him to the couch. he wasn't the type to set the mood or make things fancy, but that's what she liked about it. they both understood that sometimes, you didn't need anything special to enjoy each other's company.
"yeah, just need to finish this assignment," she said, settling down with her laptop and books. bakugo sat down next to her, his own laptop open in front of him. they worked in companionable silence, the soft tapping of keys the only sound in the room.
for a while, they simply studied. y/n would glance up now and then, catching bakugo's eye briefly before returning to her work. she found herself feeling surprisingly at ease in his presence, a sense of comfort that she couldn't quite explain. it wasn't like they had to constantly talk or entertain each other. they were just there—together—doing their own things.
every so often, bakugo would glance over at her, his intense gaze shifting from his screen to her focused expression. there was something about watching her work, the way she got so absorbed in it, that made him feel oddly content. it wasn't like him to feel this calm, but with her around, it just... felt right.
hours passed like this, the night creeping in as the room grew darker. y/n was almost finished with her assignment when bakugo finally broke the silence.
"you done yet?" he asked, leaning back on the couch, arms folded behind his head.
"almost," she replied, tapping away at her keyboard. "i'll be done in a few minutes."
he gave her a small nod, then stood up and stretched. "i'm starving. you want to grab something to eat?"
y/n glanced at the clock, realizing how late it had gotten. she was exhausted, but she didn't want to leave yet. "i'm good for now, actually. i'll just finish up here."
bakugo raised an eyebrow but didn't argue. instead, he went to the kitchen and returned with a couple of takeout boxes, setting them down in front of her. "figured you could use a break," he muttered.
y/n smiled, surprised by the gesture. she hadn't expected him to be so thoughtful, but somehow, it felt natural. "thanks, bakugo. you didn't have to, though."
"i know," he replied, sitting back down. "but i wanted to."
they ate in silence, the only sound now the soft clink of utensils and the occasional hum of the refrigerator. as the night wore on, the conversation shifted to lighter topics. y/n found herself laughing at some of the ridiculous things bakugo had been up to lately, and even he cracked a smile here and there, his usual gruffness easing up just a little.
eventually, as the night came to an end and y/n finished her work, bakugo stood up, stretching again. "you need a ride back to your place?"
y/n nodded, packing up her things. "yeah, that'd be great. thanks for letting me hang out."
bakugo gave her a small, genuine smile as he grabbed his keys. "no problem. i'll take you back."
as they got into the car, the drive was quiet but comfortable, neither of them feeling the need to fill the silence with small talk. they were both content just being in each other's presence. when they pulled up to her apartment, bakugo turned to her, his expression serious but not cold.
"so, uh..." he began, looking over at her. "i was thinking... maybe we could go out tomorrow? like, for real. not just hanging out at my place."
y/n blinked, surprised by the sudden shift in his tone. her heart skipped, the excitement from earlier bubbling back to the surface. "you mean... a date?"
"yeah. a date," he confirmed, his gaze softening ever so slightly. "what do you say?"
y/n hesitated for a moment, her mind racing, but then she smiled. "i'd like that."
bakugo nodded, a small but pleased grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. "good. i'll pick you up tomorrow, then."
y/n stepped out of the car and closed the door behind her, her heart fluttering as she watched bakugo drive off into the night. it felt like the beginning of something new, something exciting—but this time, they were taking it slow. and maybe, just maybe, that was exactly what they both needed.
