the days since their rooftop conversation had blurred together in a haze of routines—classes, assignments, study sessions. and every now and then, when she allowed her mind to wander, a flash of memory would cut through the monotony: bakugo, standing on the roof, a few words exchanged, a subtle shift in the air. y/n had tried to push it all to the back of her mind, focusing on the tasks at hand, but every time her phone buzzed, her heart would inexplicably skip a beat. it didn't matter who the message was from. she couldn't help but wonder: was this it? was she overthinking things?

today, though, everything felt a little... off.

sitting in the university café, y/n stared blankly at the screen of her laptop, the half-finished cup of coffee growing cold in front of her. her fingers hovered over the keyboard, but the words just wouldn't come. she tried to focus, but her mind kept drifting back to the last few days. no new messages from bakugo. not since that strange text on the rooftop. she hadn't expected him to text her at all, and yet—now the silence felt louder than any conversation could have been. the empty buzzing of her phone, the absence of messages, had her on edge.

the bustling noise of the café seemed to fade into the background as she tapped her pen against her mug, tapping out an unsteady rhythm. had he lost interest? had the playful banter been nothing more than a passing moment?

a flash of red broke her out of her trance. she glanced up to see a familiar figure stepping through the door—fiery hair, broad shoulders, and that signature grin plastered across his face.

kirishima.

his loud voice echoed through the room as he spotted her. "y/n! fancy seeing you here!" his wave was as enthusiastic as ever, drawing a few amused glances from nearby customers.

y/n offered a small smile, though her mind was still preoccupied. "hey, kirishima," she greeted, sitting up straighter. "what brings you here?"

kirishima strode over, his energy contagious as he plopped down in the seat across from her. "eh, just grabbing a quick coffee before class," he said, leaning back casually. "but lucky me, i get to run into you!"

she chuckled lightly, grateful for the distraction, even if her thoughts lingered elsewhere. "lucky, huh? big plans today?"

"nah, just the usual," kirishima replied, then leaned forward, his tone dropping into something more playful. "though... i did just hear something interesting."

y/n raised an eyebrow, curious despite herself. "oh? and what would that be?"

he grinned, clearly savoring whatever he was about to say. "bakugo's been talking about you."

her heart stopped.

"what?" she asked, her voice higher than she intended.

kirishima's grin widened. "yeah, you heard me. he's been asking about you. like, what you're up to, where you're at. you know, subtle stuff—for him, anyway."

y/n blinked, trying to process his words. bakugo had been asking about her? why? her mind raced, her heart thudding in her chest. was kirishima messing with her, or was this real?

"i—uh—" she stammered, completely caught off guard. "why would he...?"

kirishima shrugged, still grinning like he had all the answers. "dunno. but it's not every day that bakugo takes an interest in someone. usually, he just yells at people until they leave him alone."

y/n couldn't help but laugh, though it was a bit shaky. "sounds about right."

"anyway," kirishima continued, his tone turning a bit more serious, "he might not show it, but he's paying attention. and if I were you, i wouldn't overthink it too much."

easier said than done. y/n nodded slowly, her mind already racing with possibilities. she hadn't expected this—any of this. but now that it was happening, she wasn't sure what to make of it.

before she could dwell on it too long, kirishima stood, brushing imaginary dust off his jeans. "well, i better grab that coffee before i'm late," he said with a wink. "good luck with whatever you're working on. and hey—don't let bakugo stress you out too much. he's a good guy, deep down."

"thanks, kirishima," y/n replied, her voice softer now. "i'll... keep that in mind."

as he walked away, leaving her alone at the table once more, y/n stared at her laptop screen, the words still refusing to come. kirishima's words echoed in her mind, mingling with the memory of bakugo's last text.

he's paying attention.

for the first time in days, she allowed herself to smile.
