The night was suffocatingly quiet when Lan Wangji stumbled through the door, the faint scent of alcohol clinging to him like an unwelcome shadow. His usually immaculate composure was fractured, his steps unsteady, and his gaze glassy with a mixture of sorrow and frustration. Wei Wuxian, who had been preparing to retire for the evening, froze at the sight of him.
"Wangji?" Wei Wuxian's voice was cautious, layered with concern and surprise. Seeing Lan Wangji in such a state was rare, almost unthinkable.
Lan Wangji didn't respond. He leaned heavily against the wall, his jaw clenched as if holding back words that threatened to spill out. Wei Wuxian hesitated, then moved closer.
"Let me help you." He reached out, intending to steady the younger man, but the moment his hand brushed against Lan Wangji's arm, the latter recoiled sharply.
"Don't," Wangji snapped, his voice thick and unsteady. "I don't need your help."
The words stung, but Wei Wuxian kept his composure. "You're drunk," he said softly. "Just sit down, and I'll—"
"Why do you care?" Lan Wangji cut him off, his voice rising with an edge of bitterness. "You've always acted like you cared, but it's all a lie, isn't it?"
Wei Wuxian's heart clenched at the accusation. "That's not true, Wangji. I've always—"
"You've always what?" Lan Wangji's eyes, usually so composed, burned with a mix of anger and pain. "Taken my father's place? Pretended to care while destroying everything that mattered to me?"
Wei Wuxian stepped back, his chest tightening. He wanted to defend himself, to explain the truth that Lan Wangji refused to see, but the younger man's anguish was a wall he couldn't breach. Instead, he said quietly, "You've had too much to drink. We can talk about this in the morning."
But Lan Wangji wasn't done. His next words were quieter, laced with a vulnerability that Wei Wuxian hadn't expected. "Why did you stay? Why didn't you just leave when he died?"
Wei Wuxian's breath caught. He met Wangji's gaze, his own eyes shimmering with unspoken emotions. "Because you needed someone. And no matter how much you hate me, I couldn't abandon you."
The silence that followed was heavy, the air between them crackling with unspoken tensions. Then, in a moment that neither of them fully understood, the fragile boundary between them shattered. Lan Wangji reached out, his hand gripping Wei Wuxian's wrist. The pheromones he released were meant to overpower him, show Lan Wangji's dominance as an alpha. What it did however was trigger Wei Wuxian's heat, his eyes glazing over as he struggled to maintain control.
"Don't lie to me," Wangji murmured, his voice trembling. "Don't pretend this is about me."
Wei Wuxian didn't have a chance to respond. His own pheromones bled out into the room as Lan Wangji groaned. The lines of reason blurred as Lan Wangji brought his lips down on that of his elder, smothering him in a kiss that knew no end. Wei Wuxian felt his slick threaten to pour out of him. The arousal came in tidal waves of passion as Lan Wangji's pheromones teased his heat, Wangji's icy hatred barging against his heat.
Lan Wangji tore at Wei Wuxian's clothes, tearing at the seams, his nails leaving marks on the latters skin. Wei Wuxian felt his knees give way as the alpha took charge of his senses. He pushed two fingers into his opening, testing his slick. Wei Wuxian let out a howl mixed with pain and pleasure. Lan Wangji's hand grabbed his shaft, stroking him, making his slick flow more freely. As Wangji stroked him with one hand and pumped him with another, Wei Wuxian knelt on the ground wailing. Lan Wangji brought his teeth down on his neck, drawing blood.
Soon what was meant to be hatred turned into passion, each tearing away at the other's control and patience. Lan Wangji poured out his disdain for Wei Wuxian in bites and kisses with the intent to subdue and humiliate the latter. Wei Wuxian, who had fought the world tooth and nail to protect the child entrusted to him when he was a little more than a child himself, surrendered to the same boy's dominance allowing himself to be bullied, hurt and humiliated. When Lan Wangji bit into Wei Wuxian's neck, his eyes glowed as the bond solidified, a mark developing on the omega's nape.
The line between confrontation and comfort blurred, and in their shared vulnerability, they crossed into something irreversible. Wei Wuxian felt his instincts take over as Lan Wangji's alpha dominated him. The omega in him relished in the bond as his channel opened and he allowed himself to be knotted to his alpha, permanently binding his fate to him. The night became a haze of emotions too complex to untangle—anger, sorrow, longing, and something deeper, something neither of them dared name.

The next morning, Wei Wuxian awoke with a heaviness in his chest. The events of the previous night replayed in his mind with brutal clarity. He found Lan Wangji sitting by the window, his posture rigid and his face unreadable.
"We need to talk," Wei Wuxian began, his voice hesitant.
Lan Wangji didn't turn to face him. "There's nothing to say."
"There's everything to say," Wei Wuxian countered, stepping closer. "Last night—"
"Was a mistake," Lan Wangji interrupted, his tone sharp. He finally turned, and his eyes were cold, a wall of ice that Wei Wuxian couldn't penetrate. "It shouldn't have happened."
Wei Wuxian felt his heart sink, but he nodded. "If that's how you feel, then fine. But we can't ignore it. Pretending it didn't happen won't make it go away, make my mark go away. You are my alpha now."
Lan Wangji eyes flared. "It was a mistake," he reiterated.
"How do you expect me to deal with the bond?" Wei Wuxian asked.
"I, Lan Wangji, reject the bond with Wei Wuxian," Lan Wangji declared.
The statement held power and Wei Wuxian felt the bond, that had been a tangible presence between them the night before, snap. The recoil sent a whiplash of pain and he curled over. Lan Wangji smirked, satisfied to see him writhe in pain. "This pain is what you deserve," Lan Wangji emphasized.
Wei Wuxian winced, gathering himself from the floor and left the room, leaving Lan Wangji to grapple satisfied in his own sadism. In his arrogance what the alpha did not realize was that though the mark left him, his omega, already knotted, would remain bound to him till death, his mark, now one of shame rather than claim, would bear testimony of Wangji's rejection.
A/N This story only borrows its essence from 'My Best Mistake' by @zhanyi_bunny07. Everything else is my own. I have included details from Omegaverse to make the story more plausible. Also, my rendition is #Wangxian in contrast to the original #XianWang. Nonetheless, this isn't my usual stuff. Hope you do enjoy it though. It's being written mostly for the pleasure of reading. I do use ChatGPT for editing. It doesn't influence my storyline or creativity, just my grammar and presentation. I do so because this is my reading account, and I spend very less time on it.
