"I really don't understand him, Mami." Sameerah got up to pace some of her upset feeling away, she faced her mother who was sitting in the living room with her after her father had stormed off.

"He asked me to find a husband before September, this is May, I found a man willing to be married to me, he's Muslim, he's in good health, he's even the governor of a state. If I didn't know any better, I'd expect him to be jumping for joy." Sameerah threw herself into the comfortable sofa near her mother after she finished speaking. She had no singular idea why her father had chosen to be headstrong on today of all days.

"You know very well that your father and his friend are trying to topple the governor for Kabir." Sameerah raised her hands in wonder, she had no idea how that concerned her.

"How's that my business?" She questioned sassily and Her mother sighed impatiently at her intentional bull-headedness before leaning over to explain to her carefully.

"He's trying to get a mining license, and Rano is not willing to sign it, so he has to support another candidate that is going to give him the opportunity he needs." Sameerah narrowed her eye in her mother's direction.

"Since when did Baba become interested in mining? Is this something Sa'ad has put him to again?" Sameerah could no longer hide her irritation at her father's selfishness. He was one of the richest men in the country with interests in almost every sector but he just had to go dip his hands into the dirty, murky waters of mining.

"Sa'ad wants to manage the company. We can become even more powerful." Sameerah shook her head at what she confirmed was stupidity, her parents were so deeply obsessed with making sure to cater to Sa'ad's whims and caprices that they now forgot what it meant to cater to him. With Sa'ad, there was no bottom line, no end to his demands.

"You do know that all there is in Bebeji are those cheap crystals? Those ones you refuse to even wear?" Her mother's mouth dropped open in surprise. "You think we didn't test? We did. I just hope you all know what you're doing sinking the family's fortune into a worthless endeavor." She tutted irritatedly, picked up her tote bag and climbed the stairs to her room.

A message came in as soon as she was done showering. Hafsah had gone on a trip with her husband to Maiduguri and she was living vicariously through her best friends streaks on Snapchat. She watched them like a vlog. She pulled out her phone and found a seat on her bed once she saw it was Aminu who was texting.

I'm in Abuja for a few days, want to go to lunch?

Sameerah considered saying no, but she was too incensed from her father's earlier comment about Aminu being a ritualistic man that she decided to go out just to spite him.

We can have boto-restaurant free for lunch, Na san ba ki son taron mutane.

She immediately tapped the thumbs up sign over his message and began to look for an outfit, a light blue lightly embroidered Abaya seemed perfect for the situation so she rung the housekeeper from her room and had it sent off to be steamed and ironed.

During the wait time, she pulled her hair into a sleek bun found her jewelry for the day and set them out on her dresser. As she waited for the housekeeper to arrive with her ironed outfit, her mind went to the beginning of the conversation she had that morning with her mother. She had told her to prepare, Aminu Rano was sending his people. Her father had unfortunately been passing by and heard their discussion.
