Lisa's car barely came to a stop in front of the hospital when she flung the door open, rushing to Jennie's side. Jennie slumped in the passenger seat, her face ghostly pale and streaked with sweat. The blood staining her dress seemed to grow darker, more vivid, with each passing second.
"Stay with me, Jennie," Lisa whispered hoarsely, her voice trembling as she gently lifted Jennie into her arms. She fought to keep her tears at bay, the lump in her throat nearly choking her. Every step toward the emergency entrance felt like an eternity, her mind flooded with thoughts she couldn't silence. This is my fault. I wasn't there for her. What if—what if it's too late?
"Please!" Lisa cried as she stumbled through the doors. "Someone help her!"
A team of nurses hurried toward them, their calm professionalism a stark contrast to Lisa's panic. "What happened?" one of them asked, her hands already assessing Jennie's condition.
"She's pregnant. She's bleeding heavily. Please, save her. Save my baby!" Lisa's voice cracked, her desperation spilling over.
"We need a gurney, now!" the nurse shouted to her team. A wheelchair was brought over, but Lisa refused to let Jennie go.
"I'll carry her," Lisa insisted, her arms tightening protectively around Jennie.
"Ma'am, let us help," the nurse said firmly, placing a calming hand on Lisa's arm. Lisa hesitated, her heart wrenching as she finally laid Jennie down.
"Lisa..." Jennie's voice was barely audible, her lips trembling as she reached for Lisa's hand.
"I'm here," Lisa said, clutching her hand tightly as the nurses wheeled Jennie away. But as they pushed her through the double doors, a nurse turned to Lisa, blocking her path.
"You have to wait here," she said gently but firmly.
Lisa froze, her feet rooted to the ground as the doors swung shut. The emptiness that engulfed her was suffocating. She pressed her fists against her temples, pacing the sterile waiting area. The memory of Jennie's pale face haunted her, the sight of the blood staining her dress seared into her mind.
Inside the room, Jennie felt herself drifting in and out of consciousness, the fluorescent lights above her flickering like stars through a haze. The gurney beneath her rattled slightly as the nurses worked around her with clinical precision.
"BP is dropping," one of them said, her voice tense.
"Prep an IV," the doctor ordered. "We need to stop the bleeding and assess fetal distress immediately. Get the ultrasound ready."
Jennie's fingers weakly brushed against her stomach, a protective gesture that felt futile against the chaos inside her. Her vision blurred with tears, each droplet a reminder of her mounting guilt. Is this karma? she thought, a sob escaping her lips. Is this punishment for what I've done to Chaeyoung? For all the lies, the cruelty?
The doctor leaned over her, his voice calm yet urgent. "Miss Kim, you're experiencing a threatened miscarriage. We're going to do everything we can to stop the bleeding and keep the baby safe, but you need to stay with us. Can you do that?"
Jennie nodded weakly, though her body felt like it was slipping away from her control. "Please," she whispered. "Save my baby."
The nurse injected something into her IV. "This will help relax your uterus and control the bleeding," she explained.
Jennie barely processed the words. Her mind was consumed by the tiny heartbeat inside her, the life she'd been so desperate to protect despite the chaos she'd caused. I love you, she thought, her hand trembling as it rested on her abdomen. I love you so much. Please don't leave me.
