5 years ago--Vahni POV:
I wake up to my mom's gentle voice, "Vahni beta, get up, it's 11. Veer said he'll come at 11:30." I sit up, rubbing my eyes, trying to remember how I ended up in my bed. The last thing I recall is falling asleep, but it wasn't in Veer's arms... or was it? I look at my mom questioningly.
She smiles understandingly. "Veer left after you fell asleep, informing me that he'll pick you up at 11:30 today and take you to school." Memories of our conversation yesterday flood back, and I nod my head. My mother leaves, and I'm left alone to face the day.
I walk over to the mirror, and the person staring back at me is almost unrecognizable. My eyes are red and puffy, with dark circles underneath. My eyelids feel heavy, and my eyes ache from crying. My hair is a tangled mess, with knots and strands sticking out in every direction. My face is pale, with a few streaks of dried tears on my cheeks. I look like I've been through a war.
I brush my teeth and try to fix my looks a bit, but my red, puffy eyes are still visible. I take my phone out of the charger and reply to Anisha and Shruti, telling them I'm coming to school. Anisha responds immediately, "Now?" I answer, "Yes, just for a bit." Shruti replies, "We'll wait in the canteen."
I head downstairs at 11:20, wearing baggy jeans and a T-shirt. My mom gives me breakfast, and I eat silently, still feeling a bit numb.
Soon, I hear the familiar sound of Veer's horn. I walk outside, bidding my mom goodbye. Veer asks me, "How are you feeling today?" I answer softly, "Low..." He nods sympathetically. "It will get better with time, Vini baby."
As we reach school on Veer's bike, he parks it, and we enter through the back gate. My heart beats fast with anxiety as we walk through the empty corridors. Memories of yesterday come flooding back, but I push them aside and focus on the present.
The break has just started, and the canteen is almost full. Veer opens the door with a bang, and all the murmurs stop. He strides in dominantly, and I move close behind him. He stands in front of Ahana, and the whole canteen watches us.
Ahana looks at him seductively, which makes me feel disgusted. Veer towers over her and says loudly and clearly, his voice booming through the canteen, "Listen, Ahana, I don't know what fantasy world you live in, but we are nothing. And whatever is going on between me and Vahni has nothing to do with you."
He continues, "And don't think of her like you are. You may be a certain way, but she isn't. She is so much better and amazing, something you will never be, no matter how hard you try."
Ahana glares at me and says to Veer, "But Veer, baby, I didn't tell her anything that isn't true." Veer responds firmly, "It's her business with whom she roams around. You are no one to tell her anything. And get this straight through your thick skull: we are nothing. We never were."
The canteen falls silent, and Ahana cries and stomps her foot, leaving with her minions following her. Veer glares at the others and takes my hand, leading me through the hallways. I see my best friends following us.
Once we are out of school, we stop and decide to get ice cream. My mood becomes a bit better after the sweet treat. My friends leave, and Veer brings me home, dropping me off before leaving.
Once we are out of school, we stop and decide to get ice cream. My mood becomes a bit better after the sweet treat. We walk into the ice cream parlor, and my friends, Anisha and Shruti, join us. We order our favorite flavors and sit down at a small table.
Anisha asks me, "Vini, are you okay? What happened yesterday?" I glance at Veer, and he nods subtly, encouraging me to share.
I take a deep breath and summarize the events of the previous day. My friends listen attentively, their expressions growing more and more outraged.
Shruti exclaims, "That's awful! Vihaan is such a jerk!" Anisha nods in agreement. "We're here for you, Vini. Don't worry."
Veer smiles and puts his arm around me. "Yeah, you're not alone, Vini. We've got your back." I feel a sense of gratitude towards my friends and Veer.
After finishing our ice cream, my friends leave, and Veer brings me home, dropping me off before leaving.
I enter the house, feeling emotionally drained, and plop down on the couch. My mom brings me a glass of juice and glances at me with concern before asking, "Can we talk about yesterday?" I nod, knowing she deserves to know the truth.
I take a deep breath before telling her everything - from my plans to propose to Vihaan to the shocking betrayal. When I finish, I look at her, and her eyes are glossy with tears. She hugs me tightly and says, "My baby girl has been going through so much, and you didn't think you could share it with me?"
I wipe my own tears and say, "I didn't want to bother you." She looks at me with a warm smile and says, "You can never be a bother, sweetheart. You are our everything. Take your time, stay at home, and study for your finals. Go out when you're ready to face the world."
She pauses, collecting her thoughts before continuing, "And I am so thankful to Veer for everything he has done for you. He's a good friend, and I'm grateful he's been there for you during this difficult time."
