The cullens had just moved into their new home in forks. Their home was hidden away in the woods so they could be themselves and is easy to go hunt.
All the mated couples sat next to each other on the sofas, reading a magazine, newspaper or a book. While the only single vampire was sat at the piano playing one of his songs.
It was peaceful at the house until Alice gasped, catching everyone's attention. When she came back from her vision, Alice smiled.
"What did you see, Alice?" Carlisle asked.
While Alice smiled wider, Edward stepped up to speak.
"You're about to adopt a little girl." He said, looking at Carlisle and esme.
"We do? What does she look like?" Esme asked in excitement. She always wanted a little child.
"We are about to meet her. Her dad is the chief, and he's trying his best, but he can't meet her needs. He'll ask by the end of this meeting." Alice said, bouncing down the stairs with Esme and Carlisle close behind her. The others looked at each other before heading down.
Jasper was nervous he didn't want to hurt the girl by accident. He held his breath as he went downstairs as the door knocked.
"Hello, I came to welcome you to forks. I'm Chief Charlie Swan, and this is Freya, my youngest daughter." Charlie's voice spoke up after Alice opened the door being met with the family.
Upon hearing her name, Freya poked her head from behind the man and smiled brightly. Everyone awwed at the cute little ginger with bright blue eyes.
"Hewo, I'm Freya. I suffer from short-term memory loss." The small girl with fire like hair said while waddling around Charlie. "You're really pretty." She added, looking to Esme with grabby hands.
Esme picked up the little girl with tears in her eyes. Rosalie looked at the girl with so much love. Carlisle smiled at the young girl and was intrigued by her. Edward wasn't too sure about her because her mind was fuzzy to him. Emmet looked goofy with his large smile that looked ready to split his face. Alice was excited as she looked at her mate Jasper as he relaxed. The small girl made him feel calm and almost..... human.
Esme looked at Charlie and smiled.
"Would you like to come in? Have a coffee? We have some sweets that Freya can have or fruit if that is what she prefers." Esme offered kindly.
Charlie nodded with a chuckle.
"That would be nice. Erm, she's taken to you quickly." Charlie said, looking from his daughter to Esme, who had a large smile.
"I've always loved kids. I couldn't have any of my own, so we adopted, but we never adopted so young before, and I wish we had sometimes." Esme spoke as she led him into the house. She looked off dreamily into the distance, imagining what her and Carlisle's babies would have looked like.
Charlie notices the look. He looked at his daughter, then at Esme and Carlisle. He knew he wasn't able to give his daughter what she needed and knew they could.
"Would you still?" Charlie said before they looked at him confused. "Adopt, I mean."
"Yes, we would." Esme replied.
"Would you adopt a child like Freya?" He asked, feeling ashamed that he couldn't look after his child. "I can't give her what she needs. We barely get by because I have to take her to work with me, and a police station is no place for a little girl..."
Charlie started to ramble on before being stopped by Carlisle.
"We would love to. And you can come see her whenever you would like."
Charlie smiled with relief at the idea of being able to see her whenever he could. Carlisle looked at Charlie before speaking again.
"I'm a doctor. I'll be working at the hospital here in forks. Would you be able to tell me about Freya's short-term memory loss, please? So we can better understand her."
Charlie nodded and began to explain.
"On a good day, she can remember throughout the day. On a bad day, she can forget as soon as she looks away. But it also happens when she goes to sleep. No one knows why it happens." He said with a sad smile. "She knows her name and that she has short-term memory loss because she has had to say it so many times."
The cullens looked at the small girl that lay asleep in Esme's arms. They knew they would do anything for the little girl to have the best life, and the best thing was they didn't have to worry about her knowing their secrets because she would forget them within 24 hours.
After a while of talking, Charlie was ready to leave, but Freya was still asleep on Esme. Esme smiled at Charlie.
"She can stay the night if that's OK. One of the girls can come grab some clothes for her." Esme offered.
"Yes, that is OK, and I can give your daughter the papers for you to sign. And we can get the adoption done." He gave a small smile. He was still feeling guilty for not being able to take care of his daughter.
"Of course. Rosalie, do you mind going with Charlie?" Carlisle spoke up to the blond.
"Of course. I want cuddles with her after, though." Rosalie said with a smile as she followed Charlie.
