"And when I leave, be sure I have done all I could to stay"

5 years ago--Vahni POV:
I open the unknown message first, and a smile spreads across my face as I read the familiar greeting: "Hey princess." I know exactly who sent it, and I save his contact as "V." I text him back, "Have u reached home?"
The reply comes almost instantly, and I chuckle at his response: "So concerned about my safety?" I scoff internally, thinking that he's just trying to flirt with me. I reply back, "You wish."
He responds with a wink emoji, saying, "Yes, I did. Just eating lunch now." I roll my eyes good-naturedly and say, "Okay."
I move on to open Vihaan's text, and my expression darkens as I read his message. It says, "Stay away from Veer. He is bad news." A wave of anger washes over me, and I feel like going and slapping him. Who does he think he is, trying to control me?
I think about texting him back and telling him to mind his own business, but I decide against it. Instead, I leave him on "seen" and move on.
I scroll through my messages and see another text from Veer. It says, "Wait for me tomorrow morning. From tomorrow, I'll pick you up and drop you off on my bike." I text him back, "Kays, don't forget to bring 2 helmets with you V."
Veer responds, asking, "V?" I reply, "That's my nickname for you."
I open my friends' chats and see a flood of apologetic messages from Anisha and Shruti. My heart swells with emotion as I read their words, feeling a deep sense of gratitude and love for my friends.
I take a deep breath and type out a response, trying to convey my feelings. "Hey guys, sorry for reacting like that. I was just not in the right state of mind. You guys didn't do anything wrong. You were there for me when I had no one. Always. Thanks for that. Sorry again."
I pause for a moment, collecting my thoughts before continuing. "I ignored you guys today in school because I just needed some time alone. Let's meet tomorrow during break?"
Anisha texts back immediately, "Sure, I hope you're doing better. We understand, you don't have to apologize, btw. We heard what happened today."
Shruti chimes in, "Yeahhh, Veeerrrrr... Is something going on between you two? Btw, be safe, it seems like he's a player, so yeah, I don't want you to get hurt again."
I smile, feeling a sense of relief that my friends are looking out for me. I text back, "It's nothing, he just flirts, and I don't feel that way about him. I feel like he's a nice guy, tbh."
After a lovely conversation with my friends, I decide to take some time for myself to relax and unwind. I head to the bathroom to get fresh, indulging in a warm shower that soothes my muscles and calms my mind. The warm water cascades down my body, washing away the stress and fatigue of the day.
Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, I wear my favorite sundress and head downstairs to the kitchen to grab some lunch. The aroma of freshly cooked food wafts through the air, making my stomach growl with anticipation. My mom has prepared a delicious meal of chicken tikka masala with steaming hot basmati rice and naan . I take a seat at the table, and my mom joins me, asking about my day. I fill her in on the events, leaving out some of the more dramatic details.
After lunch, I head to my room to start tackling my homework. I sit down at my desk, surrounded by textbooks, notes, and stationery. I take a deep breath, focusing my mind on the tasks at hand. I begin with my math homework, working through the problems and exercises with ease. As I work, I feel my mind clearing, and my thoughts becoming more organized. The rhythmic scratch of my pen on paper is soothing, and I find myself getting lost in the routine of homework.
As the evening wears on, the sky outside my window gradually darkens. My mom brings a tray of food to my room, not wanting to disturb me from my studies. I appreciate the thoughtful gesture and smile as I take the tray from her.
As I eat, I scroll through my phone, catching up on any messages or updates I might have missed. My eyes land on a goodnight message from Veer, and I smile, feeling a sense of friendship and camaraderie. I quickly type out a response, wishing him a good night as well.
After finishing my meal, I bring the empty plates downstairs to the kitchen, where my parents are watching TV. I wish them a good night, giving them each a hug and a kiss on the cheek. They smile and return my affection, telling me to get some rest.
I head back upstairs, feeling grateful for my loving family. I begin my night routine, brushing my teeth, washing my face, and changing into comfortable pajamas. Finally, I climb into bed, feeling cozy and relaxed. I snuggle under the blankets, close my eyes.
As I drift off to sleep, I'm surprised to find that my mind isn't consumed by thoughts of Vihaan. For the first time in what feels like an eternity, I'm able to quiet the constant chatter in my head, the what-ifs and maybes that have haunted me since our falling out.
Instead, my mind begins to wander to a different place, a parallel world where I never met Vihaan. I imagine a life where I didn't experience the highs and lows of our tumultuous relationship. A life where I didn't have to deal with the pain and heartache that he brought into my world.
As I sleep, I dream of this alternate reality and for the first time in a long time I feel like I can breathe again.
