The sun shone high in the sky, ready to blind anyone who dared to stare at it for too long. The clouds were scattered and few; perhaps wanting to watch the events of the day, only from the sidelines.
The two teams stood bravely on the basketball ground. Team Gathiya consisted of Fiza, Jay, and his sister, Hilloni. Yes, he has a sister, and in four years of his friendship with Karan and Arav, he never once mentioned it. What a brother!
His excuse? She was studying out of state, and even though he kept in contact, he didn't tell them that because he thought they knew. Not everyone's a mind reader like you, Jay!
Team Jalebi had Arav, Alan, and Karan. Jay would have joined them, but he was too prideful to admit he never mentioned his sister. He has a long day in front of him. Meanwhile, Karan and Arav just assumed she was Fiza's friend.
You want to guess who's the referee? Suresh Sir, of course! He may not be playing now, but ask him a question, and he'd be ready to spill the golden, "BACK IN MY DAY" story. Trust me, he's got stories for ages to come.
Did I tell you about his love interest? Well, it's Maya. She's busy, though. But I am sure you'll meet her or probably notice her when she crashes into the basketball court. Yes, crash. No, I don't mean enter. Her driver's license needs redemption.
The game starts at the center line, where the leaders of both teams stand opposite one another, waiting to catch the ball and take the offensive side. Neither had its benefits; it all depends on how you play, but this is like a game of chess—except the teams are fighting to be the white piece.
It was collectively decided that Jay would be the leader of Team Gathiya while Team Jalebi was led by Karan. What better way to spice the game up than to put two best friends on opposite teams? Watch the clown show unfold!
Before going, Jay turned to Fiza and addressed her. "Didi, wish me luck." On cue, Hilloni scoffed and mocked a cough. Jay rolled his eyes but grinned. "You, as well."
Fiza, oblivious to the sibling rivalry, announced, "Let's go, Team Gathiya, for the win! Though... I'd have preferred kaya varuthathu."
Hilloni turned to her in surprise. "What in the world is 'kaya varuthathu'? I've never heard of it."
"It's plantain chips. Unripe banana mixed with spices and fried. I always prefer it over the regular potato chips." Fiza explained.
Towards the center of the court, Jay and Karan made a dramatic entry where an impatient Suresh Sir was awaiting their arrival.
"Seriously, you two? I've got a game to officiate." He declared dryly.
Karan gave him a shy grin while Jay held a smug smile. The game was on.
The ball was tossed, and Karan was the first to tap it. However, Jay didn't back down and tried to catch the ball. Karan was pivoting and managed to pass the ball to Alan, who swiftly dribbled across the court.
Alan underestimated Fiza's training. She snatched the ball from Alan's hand and passed it to Jay even when Karan almost got the ball.
An electrifying intensity sparked between Alan and Fiza as they realized the close proximity they were in. Deciding to focus on the game first, they supported their teammates—each trying to outdo the other.
Hilloni wasted no time in standing or running around. She attacked top, right, center, and about anywhere she could without earning a foul.
Suresh Sir was impressed by her skills. Each time he came close to calling a foul, she dodged it by mere inches, making him reconsider his judgment. Like brother, like sister. It flows in the genes.
