▪︎The Name Game

In today's episode of Pages Unscripted, we are gonna gossip about the cliche desi wattpad names. If your character isn't named Ahaan, Vihaan, Rehaan, Ayansh, Advik, he isn't attractive.

Let's start with Ahaan : Can you please close you eyes and picture him for a second before we proceed further ?

What did you see?

A 27 year old guy driving his Porsche wearing the limited edition Armani suit, tailor-made for him. A luxury pair of sunglasses perched just right upon his nose. And his jawline? so sharp, it can cut through a pineapple. Also, he isn't an IT employee or a teacher, he is the CEO of a multimillionaire company, 12×7 busy closing deals and rest 12×7 busy breaking hearts. His one smirk can make anyone's kitty wet.

Ahaan doesn't live in a penthouse, guys. He has his own private island. He has dated a dozen of girls (named Natasha, ishika) but somehow, he still hasn't found the one, only meant for him (with a name like Siya, Isha, or Meera) who will change his whole life with a single timid nod and probably a dramatic rain scene.

Now, Can you imagine Siya for me?

She is that gharelu, susheel, sundar, aagyakaari ladki who wakes up and walk to the mandir. She is always dressed up in a kurti-pants and dupatta, her wardrobe has no western dress or jeans. There us always a  small bindi always perched between her brows. She is so timid and shy, her dictionary only include a "hmm", "haa", "ji" and sometimes "Excuse me" and at time when she is at a loss of words, she would just adjust her dupatta for the 67th time and look down.

Also, A+ to Siya for being an orphan, because what else would someone named Siya possibly be? A loving daughter of a rich family?

Sorry sweetheart, happy family isn't mentioned in the terms and conditions for your name.

Her bangles jingling everytime she fixes her hair and her dupatta flutters in the air with the sole purpose of getting stuck in Ahaan's watch.

Ahaan and Siya, the power couple, the opposite attracts, the CEO X orphan, the "only she can fix him" trope.

Their ship name: "Sahan" nahi ho raha bhai mujhse.

All in all, we've reached to a point where the names are no longer names, they've become label to a specific personality traits, like Kartik will always be a green flag arranged husband. Natasha, an evil ex. Kabir, a bad boy with a luxury black motorcycle.

In real life, people don't act according to their names, and neither should our characters.

This rant isn't just about the generic names we see in Wattpad stories—it's also a confession about my own name choices. One of my characters is named Advik, and let me tell you, I use to read only fanfics. And, I had no idea Advik was this famous and overused name, popping up everywhere like a forehead pimple.

Fast forward, and here I am, regretting it like a bad haircut, but at the same time, I've grown so attached to the character that I can't help but love him. It's like a complicated relationship, really

So, here is a Name and surname guide for your mcs so that you don't end up naming him Advik and regret later.

(Also there is a note at the end, please read it before I plan to delete it)

Hey, everyone!

I hope, You all know my name is Tuhi, and I wanted to clarify that it's not a pen name, it’s my real nickname. It’s what my friends, family, and even teachers call me. It comes from the first four letters of my full name, but Tuhi feels closer to who I am than my formal name ever could. It's always there on my birthday cakes, notebook, socials and someone's contact list rather than my official name (bc people find it too hard to pronounce)

I also wanted to address something important. There’s always a reason why people might choose not to use their real name in public profiles, it’s about privacy and comfort. But if someone  decide to use their real name, especially one that’s not very common, I think it’s important to respect that choice.  If you ever find yourself inspired by a name, that rare, that you saw someone use, it’s only fair to give them a mention or a tag.

Sure, no one owns a name, and you don’t need to acknowledge every single person who shares the name of your character. But if you know a specific person who inspired you, especially if they’re your reader, it’s a matter of basic courtesy to let them know.

You can’t just take a unique name from one of your follower/following list and use it in your work, and not acknowledge where you first came across it, especially if you’ve never even reached out to that person before saying “Hey, I loved your name, What does it mean?/I've used it in book, I would love for you to check out"

It’s not even about ownership or consent, but a 'proper' acknowledgement could do wonders.

Let’s be kind and thoughtful in this creative space we share.

Thank you and take care.
