"But nothing makes a room feel emptier than wanting someone in it"
--- unknown---------------------------------------------------------
5 years ago-Vahni POV:
The exam has been going on for almost three hours now, the bell will ring anytime now. I have finished the paper almost fifteen minutes back, and right now, I just can't wait anymore.
I haven't seen him for a week, and a part of me was avoiding him too. We are in different streams, so our subjects don't match. Our school is so big that it's hard to cross paths with someone from a different stream every day. And if you try to avoid meeting someone, it isn't that hard.
As I sit here, waiting for the exam to end, my mind starts to wander. I think about the past few weeks, and how everything changed between us. I think about the way he used to look at me, the way he used to smile. My heart aches as I remember the way things used to be.
The ringing of the bell jolts me back to reality as the teacher starts collecting the papers. I hand over mine and hurriedly grab my essentials as I try to reach the end of the classroom as fast as possible.
Once I'm out of the door, I dash through the corridor, trying to push past people. I try to find that one face amidst the crowd, but fail miserably. He doesn't seem to be here. Did he take the other exit?
I run back through the crowd, and hear a number of curses as people try to move out of my way. Finally, when I reach the other end, I see him standing with his friends and chatting.
The backpack is slung on his right shoulder, and he doesn't seem to notice me though. His eyes twinkle, and he lets out a deep, rumbling laugh as he listens to what his best friend Aryaan says.
He looks so sinfully attractive in the simple school uniform. His hair falls on his forehead, and his eyes - that's something I have always loved about him. His chocolate brown eyes seem to hold the greatest mysteries of the world. His sharp jawline and chiseled features make him look like a model. His smile is radiant, and it lights up the entire room.
His broad shoulders and athletic build make him stand out in the crowd. His messy hair adds to his charm, and his bright smile can light up even the darkest of rooms. The way he carries himself with confidence and poise is something that I've always admired. His eyes sparkle with mischief, and his lips curve into a perpetual smile, making him look like the happiest person in the world.
As I stand there, frozen, taking in his features, I feel a flutter in my chest. I remember the way he used to make me feel - like I was the only person in the world. I feel a pang of sadness as I realize that those days are behind us now.
Someone slaps my back, and I let out a yelp accidentally. Looking back, I see Anisha and Shruti standing there with a knowing look on their faces. Suddenly, I remember Vihaan, and when I look ahead, I see him already looking at me. He stares at me as if he can see right through my soul. His gaze lingers on me for two seconds before he turns back and heads towards the exit.
A sigh escapes through my lips. Not even a smile. He didn't even acknowledge my presence this time. Tears threaten to spill out of my eyes, but I stop them.
Anisha asks, "Did you guys have a proper conversation after that night?" I look at them, and my lips tremble. I finally give up and start telling them everything.
By the end, I find myself sitting at the corner of the school corridor with my besties crouched beside me as I cry over my fate.
Shruti gets up and says, "Let's have a talk with him about this in person. We can't let this go on, right?" Anisha reminds us that just after the mid-semester exams, our vacations will start, making it impossible to contact someone who doesn't want to be contacted.
So we decide to wait till the end of the vacations. The uncertainty is killing me. I look at Anisha and Shruti, hoping they can provide some answers. But all they can offer is a sympathetic ear and a reassuring hug.
As we sit there, trying to make sense of everything, I realize that I'm not alone in this. I have my best friends by my side, and together, we'll face whatever comes next. But for now, I just can't help but feel a deep sense of longing. Longing for the one person who seems to be slipping away from me.
The bell rings, signaling the end of school. Students start pouring out of their classrooms, chatting and laughing with each other. I watch them, feeling a pang of sadness. Why can't I be one of them? Why can't I be carefree and happy?
I look at Anisha and Shruti, and they seem to sense my emotions. They put their arms around me, and we walk out of the school together, unsure of what the future holds, but determined to face it together.
