Penelope called me and just told me to come. Her voice seemed so done for that I was actually scared for what I was about to witness. I mean, it can't be worse than watching a guy getting murdered with cold blood.
That's what I thought.
Oh that's what I thought.
I quickly turned away gagging from the scene of six rotten dead bodies laid down neatly in a line by the forensic team which they found in a forest. I swear those guys probably lost their ability to feel disgust the moment they took their job, cause they didn't even flinch at this.
I sneaked another peek, and tried to concentrate on anything else other than the freaking smell or the terrifying decomposed bodies. "When could this have happened?" I mumbled, my stomach churning.
"The forensic department said this might have happened a month ago." Penelope startled me from appearing out of nowhere.
Heaving a sigh, I understood what that could have meant. "You said they started dating two weeks ago didn't you?" I was already at the verge of throwing up, now this was just adding up to my nausea.
She frowned, probably getting what I meant. "Gosh, how did I even let her date a stalker like him?" Her voice was full of guilt. "It's all my fault..."
"It's not your fault." I muttered weakly, it was partly my fault too for not knowing what was going on in my best friend's life. Now she, who was one of the most innocent person I have ever seen, was now involved in this gruesomeness.
One of the forensic members came to us with a report file in his hand. "Sir, some have stab wounds, and a few-"
"No, please don't tell me how they died." I shook my head, I was disturbed enough. "Just tell me if you found any physical evidence. Have you?"
I was expecting him to deny as usual, but, he nodded. "Wait, you guys actually found something?" I said, genuinely surprised.
"For once?" Penny added.
"We found a few hairs and a fingerprint, sir." He flipped through his little file and papers, flicking his gaze to us once in awhile. "We're analyzing it at the moment."
"Well, please make it quick." My anxiety suddenly raised up, I have left her alone in the house. W-What if something happens to her because I left?
A few hours passed, and I was supposed to be focused on the situation, but my mind was way too nervous to work properly. I-If he was that much of a stalker, then it won't take long for him to know where she is right now.
"Henry!" She yelled.
I snapped out of my thoughts, Penny was yelling my name for the fifth time and was annoyed as hell as I was 'ignoring' her.
"What?"
"The forensics say they have stumbled upon a problem." Penny sulked. Frowning, I gazed at the forensic team. They were literally sweating as if they were scared to tell whatever it was.
"Speak up." I urged them. I do not have the time for this. If something happened to Hannah because I was gone, I would never forgive myself for this.
"T-The hair's fake, sir."
My eyes widened slightly, why the hell was there a fake hair in a crime scene? "What about the fingerprint?" I panicked.
"It's not in the database, Henry." Penny said.
"N-Not in the database? How the hell is that even possible?" I yelled, shifting my gaze back to the forensic team. "Did you look thoroughly? Did you look under the name of Aaron McClair?"
"Henry, if it's not on the database, then the fingerprint's also fake." Penelope sighed.
Fake. That means he planned for this. Planned to waste my time. Planned to stall me. But...why? Why...why did I get stalled? No. It can't be. I-Its not for her, right?
Adrenaline rushed through my veins as I scrambled for my car keys, my hands shaking. "P-Penny, take care of this please, I-I left her alone," I stuttered, my pulse rate spiking up.
I didn't wait for her reply. I practically sprinted to my car, my breathing shallow as I sped up back home. Please be alright. Please.
Roughly parking my car on the side of the road, I ran past the gates and fumbled the front lock open. Rushing in, I saw her dozing off on the couch again with a different book this time. She looked up from the book lazily, smiling at me.
"Hey Henry," she muttered sloppily. Oh, I had never been this relieved to see her in my entire life. My adrenaline seemed to rest a bit. She was safe.
But the rest wasn't for long though, it spiked back up again after a loud glass shatter sound rang from the other side of the house. She scrambled to her feet, our eyes met once, we knew we were in trouble.
The very next moment, the power went down, drowning us in darkness, and all I heard next was a swish movement of something aimed right to the back of my head.
