CHAPTER ELEVEN

Alana

The Quince

I set up as many good songs as I could. All the songs Ruby asked for and all the ones Olivia asked for. Then I started taking requests and putting them in the que. My fingers were on fire the more I typed away. Adding songs I had forgotten about until now and other songs I'd never heard up and I just hoped I was adding the right versions that people were asking for.

It got to the point I brought out a notebook and had people start writing down what they wanted. It worked for a while until people kept coming up to me while I was trying to make my way through the yard and area we blocked off to be the dance floor. Asking for songs.

As if they couldn't see me trying to make my way around, talking to Olivia or trying to get Oscar's attention because he was still helping my family set up everything. Each time I tried to pull him aside so I could tell my parents, Mami would pull him somewhere else.

At one point I just shouted. "Can I have my boyfriend back, por favor!?" And Mami just completely ignored it. Unless she did hear me and didn't care. I don't know. But Oscar had a blast just helping out.

"You tell her yet?" Olivia asked me.

I shook my head. "She keeps stealing him because he's tall and he can reach the lights or he's strong he can move tables and carry trays of food into the house and replace them with other ones."

Olivia giggled. "Take that as a sign, she'll be fine with you and him being together. I just know it. Next week at Sunday dinner he'll be sitting at the table with us."

"You think so?" I asked nervously.

"I know so." She replied. "Alana, I never had a sister before and maybe because it's my birthday today but I'm really emotional. And I'm really, really, thankful for you. You're the older sister I wished I always had. I guess Ruby was right when he told me everything happens for a reason. I came here depressed that I'd lost my parents but I found the love of my life and I got an older sister who I'd be so lost without."

I hugged onto her tightly. "I feel the same way about you. You're smart and beautiful and you've kept my little brother happy. I'm glad I get to be your sister."

"Ruby and I will be together forever. I promise." She kissed my cheek.

"Olivia, you better hold onto that promise." I winked.

I started to walk back toward Oscar again when he came up to me with an apologetic look on his face. Disappointment filled my entire stomach and it turned completely. I swallowed hard and he kissed my on my forehead.

"Joker's Tio needs his truck back and I've got to handle some business really quickly. I'll be back, mi amor." Oscar looked more disappointed with himself than anything else. "In the meantime, I want you to get a song ready for us. A love song. Got it?"

I nodded. "Do you even know one?"

He smirked. "I thought you'd never ask." He took the notebook and wrote down at the top of the page above everyone else's requests, "Got Your Back" By T.I. and Keri Hilson.

My eyes flickered up from the page and I couldn't help but blush while butterflies danced around in my stomach. When Oscar was locked up he told me that was the only song he ever could think of when he thought of me. He said it was always stuck in his head because of how I held it down for him.
