CHAPTER NINE
Oscar
November
My hands were tight and burning. My knuckles were torn completely open and fingers were turning black and blue from the bruising. The punching bag that hung up on the back porch was torn to shreds and my arms were stiff from keeping them in the same position for punching.
I hit that sack for two weeks straight. With gloves. Without gloves. It got to the point punching wasn't enough. So I started kicking at it. Then I started shooting it. And then went back to punching it again.
Sad Eyez put a bag of ice on my hand as I sat down at the dining table in the middle of the kitchen. In my other hand was a bottle of vodka. I took a swig and let the poison that it is burn my throat and my chest with each sip.
"You're fucked, compa." Sad Eyez told me softly. I looked at him and didn't say anything. Just let more of that poison slide down my throat and fill my veins. It was the only thing that could take the pain away.
He shook his head. "You letting some hyna-"
"Don't you ever fucking call her that." I cut him off and slammed the bottle onto the table. "No one disrespects her."
"She's got you all twisted, Spooky. I never seen you this fucked up before." He sat down across from me and stared at his phone for a minute and then looked back up at me. "Where's Cesar?"
"In his room." I muttered.
Sad Eyez got up and was gone for a bit. He came back and shook his head. "Cesar ain't here and he knows the block is hot right now. He's got a green light on him and he took off-"
"What the fuck." I threw the bag of ice into the freeze and grabbed my keys, swaying a little with my step. Catching myself on the side of the fridge. "Alright, maybe I need to nap and eat something. Then I'll go find his ass."
"Call her." I knew what Sad Eyez meant. "She'll get him."
I floated my way to the living room and plopped down on the couch and pulled out my phone. Staring at the photo of me and her and how perfect her smile is when she's with me. How she looks at me and how she always has her arms around me.
I couldn't take looking at the picture anymore. I pressed the call button and waited, it rang only once and then she answered.
"What?" She asked in such a dry voice.
"Cesar at school?" I asked trying to hide that I'd been drinking so early in the morning. If I'm being real I've been drinking for the last 4 days straight. Once the anger faded it turned to hurt. Now I'm just trying to feel numb.
She paused and then exhaled into the phone. "Yeah, I'm looking at him right now. He's not supposed to be here is he?"
"No, he's not." I replied softly.
"Alright. I'll bring him home, kicking and screaming probably." She giggled slightly and I couldn't help but smile. She's the cutest when she giggles. It's like she's looking at pictures of puppies and kittens each time she giggles.
"You know I love you right?" I don't know why I said that but I did.
Silence.
"Alana?"
"I love you too, Oscar." She sounded like she was crying. "I'll... I'll talk to you when I see you, okay?"
