Chapter 155

On the way home, I got a nauseating feeling in the pit of my stomach. I pulled up to a red light and took the opportunity to call Bri to see if everything was okay. She didn't answer, so I waited a few seconds and called again, but still no answer.

The feeling in my stomach worsened, and I started to panic a little. As soon as the light turned green, I sped to Brynn's house to drop the boys off, then sped home.

I pulled up to the house, and there were two cop cars and an ambulance outside. I got out of the car and went inside, afraid of what I might find.

"Sir, you can't be in here," an officer said, rushing up to me.

"I live here. What happened? Is my wife & daughter okay?!"

"We got a call saying someone broke in and when we got here, we heard a gunshot," he explained.

My palms began to sweat, and I felt like throwing up. I didn't wanna think about Briana getting shot again.

"But your wife is okay," he continued, "she's in the living room."

I nodded and before I got there, I saw Jake being carried out on a gurney. He was bleeding somewhere from his stomach, which honestly made me feel better. He tried to say something to me, but I ignored him and went to the living room, where Briana was talking to a cop.

She turned around, then jumped off the couch and ran into my arms.

"What happened?"

"Jake broke in and tried to rape me," she said as her eyebrows knitted together, "we started fighting and the gun went off."

I wrapped my arms around her and kissed the top of her head. I couldn't help but feel like this is my fault. I shouldn't have left her alone. Or maybe I should've put Jake in his place a long time ago and this wouldn't have happened.

"Am I going to jail?" Bri asked the officer that approached us.

"No. You did what you had to do to protect yourself, and the gun just so happened to go off," he replied, "we can't punish you for that."

She nodded and rested her forehead against my chest. I thanked everyone for coming, and watched as they left.

Once they were gone, Brielle began to cry, and I told Bri I'd get her. I walked in the nursery, picked her up and she stopped crying almost immediately. I changed her diaper and carried her with me downstairs. I went in the living room, and Briana was standing at the window looking outside.

"You okay?" I asked, getting her attention.

She turned around as a tear rolled down her cheek, and smiled, "yeah."

I set Brielle in her swing, walked up to Briana and put my arm around her. "What are you thinking about?"

She looked up at me and I wiped her tears away. I've only seen her like this twice since we've been together, so this must be really bothering her.

"I'm starting to think I deserve all of this?" she said, looking out of the window.

"All of what?"

"The shitty things that happen to me," she said, tearing her eyes from the window, "maybe I deserve them."

I furrowed my eyebrows because it actually annoyed me that she thinks that.

I put my index finger under her chin, forcing her to look at me, "I never wanna hear you say that again, okay?"
