CHAPTER TWO
Ruby
August
Mario finally left for college and that means one thing and one thing only. I finally get my own bedroom. I've shared a room with Mario for as long as I can remember. But now I finally get my own bedroom. All mine.
As I started to make my bed and move my room around my sister, Alana, comes into my room with her baskets of laundry and stuffed animals. She's wearing her signature black shirt with her giant golden cross and chain.
"Why are you in my room with your stuff?" I said trying to block her from coming in further.
Alana dropped her stuff down onto the floor and then grabbed Mario's old mattress and moved it out of the room. Not uttering a single word to me. She struggled to move the box spring to the living room and that was when Mami came in and helped her.
"Ma, why is Alana in my room?" I asked nervously. My heart thundering in my chest feeling like it was going to burst out of my throat.
Mami just looked at me and smiled. "Ruby, this isn't your room anymore. Alana is getting this room. You're moving in with the twins. Luis has been so excited to share a room with you."
"No fair! Why does she get her own room? She's been fine bunking with Abuelita!" I argued and felt my hands becoming coated in sweat. I wiped them on my shirt and felt my hands now shaking.
Alana used to punch me all the time, in fact... She still does. I never hit her back but right now I wanted too just push her a little too far. Yank her hair and rip those cheap extensions out of her hair. Make her punch me so hard that Mami removes her own bedroom privileges away from her.
"She's about to be 18 in less than a month. She deserves her own room. When she goes to college next year you'll have your own room." Mami explained with a smile on her face. Alana hugged onto her. The damn brat she is.
"Mario was 18 and we still shared a room!" I argued. "She can bunk with the twins or stay with Abuelita!"
Alana came back into the room with another box of her things and laughed in my face. "Yeah well, mentally you and Mario are the same age. It was like Mami having two 14-year-olds instead of an 18-year-old, 17-year-old, 14-year-old and two seven-year-olds." She laughed loudly and dropped the box down.
The top opened slightly and when I looked into the box I could see a hand written letter sitting in it. Roses sketched onto it and her name written in fancy lettering. It was obvious someone wrote her a love letter. When I looked at where it was sent from it said the prison, but the name was scratched out.
I didn't say anything. Not with Mami standing there. But the moment Mami went into the basement to get the twins laundry I slammed the door shut and ripped the box open. Holding the letter in my hands.
"Give me that-" She yanked it from me.
"Who wrote that? Who the hell-"
"Drop it. It's nothing. I didn't even reply." She tucked it into her dresser and started throwing piles of socks and tank tops into the top drawer to hide the letter. "Get out. It's my room now."
"You look upset." I said stupidly.
Alana and I weren't as close as she was with Mario. Sometimes it pissed me off and sometimes it didn't. She tells Mario everything and tells me nothing. But I guess it's because we play this stupid back and forth game of tattling on each other.
