CHAPTER ONE
Alana
May
"You know damn well you ain't coming with me tonight." My older brother Mario says to me as he's in standing in his bedroom by his dresser dabbing on way too much cologne to the point I can feel myself getting a migraine as I'm standing in his doorway.
My little brother Ruby pushes past me to go and sit on his bed with his phone in his hands. I shut my mouth quickly. Ruby can be the biggest snitch at times, especially when it comes to me and Mario. Mami and Papi know whenever Mario and I have been in trouble especially when Ruby is around.
"Where are you going?" Ruby asks without even looking up from his phone. Texting away like his fingers may fall off.
I look into the hallway and then pull the door shut and lean against the door. Mami and Papi went to Costco so I don't have to worry about them walking in, at least not for a little while. And they brought my youngest siblings, the twins, with them.
The only person home right now besides my brothers, is my Abuelita. But she's probably downstairs in her bedroom smoking or something. She's usually pretty chill anyways. Abuelita and I are really close, ever since I was little she and I always shared a special bond. Especially when I turned 15 and I caught her smoking in the basement. Since then we've smoked together on occasion.
"Graduation party later on tonight. Only seniors are invited." Mario said dryly as he now adjusted his shirt. Which didn't need much adjusting, it's just a plain white t shirt. "And I'm trying to get it through Alana's thick skull that she can't go."
"And why exactly can't I go? Technically you graduated which makes me a senior now." I shrugged. "I have plenty of friends who are going and they said I can ride with them. I don't need you, Mario. I never have."
Mario rolled his eyes and Ruby sat up quickly. "Friends? What friends? I've never heard you talk about friends."
"Shut up Ruby." I picked up a dirty sock from the floor and tossed it at him and he screamed. "It's your sock why are you screaming like that? Maybe if you washed your clothes once in a while you wouldn't freak out over a dirty sock."
"He's not wrong." Mario said as he ran a comb through his hair now with way too much gel. "What fucking friends do you have?"
"You don't know them." I scoffed and crossed my arms.
Mario suddenly froze and looked me up and down. "Ruby. Out. Now."
"It's my room-"
"Out. Now." Mario pointed to the door. "And if I find out you were listening by the door I'll rip your throat out through your mouth and shove it up your ass."
"Fine!" Ruby called Jamal on FaceTime and I listened as he went to sit in the living room. Mario slammed the door shut and waited a minute to be sure that Ruby was a good distance away.
Mario was the brother who knew me all too well. And I knew him too good at times too. He took a few paces away from the door and sat on his bed, patting the spot on the side of him for me to sit there too.
"You still hanging with those people I told you to drop?" Mario was practically whispering at this point. "Alana you know I don't want you hanging around those guys."
I chewed the inside of my cheek and rolled my eyes, looking at the corner of the room so I could avoid saying anything to him. But he knew me too well. Mami always joked that Mario and I should have been the twins out of all her kids because we were born less than a year apart, constantly moved in the same motions, and finished each other's thoughts. Since we could talk.
