ADRIANA WALKED INTO HER FIRST-PERIOD ENGLISH CLASS, GRIPPING HER ICED COFFEE LIKE IT WAS A LIFELINE. it was barely 8 a.m., and the day was already shaping up to be a disaster. between a surprise chemistry quiz she hadn't studied for and an overdue meeting with her guidance counselor about college applications, she was on edge.
she slid into her usual seat in the middle row, giving cecelia a tired smile as she settled in next to her. adriana took a deep sip of her coffee, hoping the caffeine would kick in and get her through the next hour.
"you look like you could use a nap," cecelia observed, leaning in with a sympathetic grin. "rough morning?"
"you have no idea," adriana groaned. "if today gets any worse, i might actually lose it."
but as if the universe heard her plea, the door swung open, and chris walked in. adriana's stomach dropped, her grip tightening around her cup. he wasn't supposed to be here. english had always been one of the few places she felt safe, free from the awkward tension and painful memories he brought with him.
