We sat in a Lawyers office. Lou playing in my lap, suckling her dummy, mumbling. Myla on the chair next to me.
My lawyer, Darcy Carter looking at Lou.
"Does she know about her mother?"
"Not much." I shook my head.
"Do you know if she has any trauma from Melissa leaving?"
I looked at Myla, to Lou, and back to him. "She has separation anxiety. The first day she met Myla and we went home, she was crying hysterically about Myla leaving. She always hates being without me. But i don't know if it's normal for toddlers to behave this way or if it's to do with Melissa." I said, my voice shaking. I hate the fact Melissa did this. She ruined everything. She took everything from me.
Myla rubbed my back and i was grateful she was here with me. I couldn't do it alone.
Darcy nodded. "What contact did Melissa have with Lou, from birth to now."
"Melissa gave birth, and she did skin to skin contact, but she wasn't a fan of the blood. So the nurses took Lou, and by the time they cleaned her in 2 minutes, Melissa was too tired to hold her. So they put Lou with the other babies. I went and held her and stayed by her side, and when Melissa could walk, she came eventually. A doctor pulled me aside to talk to me. A-a-and-" My voice shook.
I hadn't told anyone this before. It was too confronting. But i know i had too.
Myla moved and held my hand, squeezing it. "Take your time."
"Melissa was taking her name off Lou's board. Saying she wasn't a parent. When she just gave birth to her an hour ago. And Lou was crying so i turned around and Melissa looked at me and told me she thought Lou was.." I gulped. "Ugly." I squeezed Myla's hand, holding my hand on Lou tightly.
"I told her not to say that, and we went to a private room having an argument. And i just blinked and she hit me and just left-and then i didn't see her again, didn't hear from her. Lou and her haven't had contact since the day she was born. I saw Melissa at my office a few days ago, but Lou doesn't know and wasn't there."
Myla squeezed my hand and kissed my cheek, the lawyer wrote everything down.
Lou turned to me, and stood up, holding my shoulders bouncing in my lap. I smiled, giving her forehead a kiss as she played happily. I love her so much.
"Did Melissa pay any sort of child support, money? Healthcare?"
I shook my head. "No."
Darcy nodded. "I think that's all i need for today. Thank you. Do you need a therapist? I can refer you to one?"
I held back a laugh. I don't know why i wanted to laugh.
"No therapists, i'm good." I shook his hand, holding Lou in the other.
