Hafsah Yar mama: Typing…
Sameerah put her phone in her bag and walked out with the others to the main hall where the convention was being held. She sat there scared for a few seconds before she realized that she could not be dragged out like a thief, she was the daughter of a billionaire, the heiress to his empire, at least to the world. Aminu Abubakar Rano, Also known as His Excellency, the executive governor of Kano state could not have her dragged her out to disgrace her without incurring her father’s wrath.
So she rested easy, with her tote bag under her feet, iPad in hand, she could hear her phone buzzing but the governor was coming in right at that point so she left it. Her name was called and she went up to the podium to discuss inane talking points she knew was all talk. Very little substance was found to be used from conversations like these but it did not hurt to attend.
Immediately her session ended and they closed for a tea break, Sameerah beckoned her assistant and exchanged pleasantries with a few people, spoke to the organizer to plead her absence and immediately took one of the side doors out of the building. She walked like she had hot coals under her manolo blahnik sling back shoes.
Only when she was in the security of her vehicle, her driver speeding out of the parking lot of the convention center did she dare bring out her phone to check. She found that she had several missed calls from Hafsah and one from her mom, her heart sped faster. It was one thing to insult a man of that stature, it was another for her father to know about it. He would rip her into shreds and never speak to her again.
Sameerah called her mother first. “Mami?” She asked, with heart thudding in her mouth, she could feel her hand shake as she tried to put her AirPods into her ear.
“Oh Mimi, I’m so proud. You did so well, I watched you with so much pride in my heart.” Sameerah finally cracked a sliver of a smile, let her heart down gently and accepted her mother’s praise. Her mother always praised her, she called her skin beautiful, she plaited her hair lovingly when she could and whenever Sameerah helped do her henna, she would show them off to whoever wanted to see that her child had done something so intricately beautiful on her skin. So, Sameerah took her mother’s praise like a healing balm.
“Thank you Mami, thank you. Did you find the link easiy to navigate?” Her mother had once opened a bad link from someone that swiped hundreds of thousands from her account so she hated links with a venom.
“I did. And your baba watched you for a few minutes too, before he left for his meeting at the polo club.” Sameerah nodded her head and ended the call on a high note. She could not worry about her father now, she had to worry about the governor.
Hafsah Yar Mama: where are you?
Hafsah Yar Mama: Did they put you in the dungeon? Innalillah!
Hafsah Yar Mama: I can see you on TV! Why didn’t you answer me?
Hafsah Yar Mama: Are you mad? Why would you even insult him? He’s one of the calmest people that have ever ruled this state! Sameerah lafiyan ki lau kuwa?
Sameerah YB: Why are you on his side?
Hafsah Yar Mama: oh so you can talk?
Sameerah YB calling.
“Why would you take his side?” Hafsah cackled so loud that Sameerah rolled her eyes in exasperation. She wished she could wring her neck from the phone, a though came to her heart so she told her driver and he turned at the next intersection to her best friend’s estate.
