Hey, y'all 🧍.
———
"Sabito, what are you still doing here?"
His peace was shattered quite simply by the appearance of a certain, otherworldly girl. He sighed, staring down at the girl.
"I could ask you the same question."
She climbed up onto the cracked rock and sat down on the other half. "Tanjiro went to the Final Selection, so I wanted to come back and surprise him when he came back." Her eyes glanced at him a few times, clearly trying to be discrete, but he knew she was never that good at it. "And . . . "
"He hasn't reached the test yet," Was all Sabito wanted to say. He knew that when Tanjiro inevitably ran into the demon that killed him, Tanjiro would kill it and he would no longer be able to appear in front of anyone. He would still be a spirit roaming the world, he could even visit Giyuu, but he wouldn't have a strong enough connection to physically form in front of anyone.
Anyone who wasn't (Y/N), at least.
(Y/N)'s quiet nod was unexpected, but welcome.
Sabito stared at the trees for a long while. Through those trees was the path that he trained on, and down the path was the clearing in front of a house where he met Giyu and Makomo, and in that house was the man who raised him to be stronger.
In the years after his death, Sabito had always stayed at this unbroken rock. He'd visit Urokodaki's house as a ghost, but he'd never show himself. Even when Urokodaki would hike up to the rock almost every morning before taking Tanjiro and (Y/N) in, he never showed himself. Urokodaki had never fully gotten over their deaths. They became the reason he stopped training more people. Even if it was to show him that they were alright, he wasn't sure if Urokodaki could move past that.
Sabito was okay with that. He was content with just watching after Urokodaki. He stayed with the other children that Urokoaki had cared for and they all watched the grey hairs populate his head and the wrinkles grow beneath his mask. His mask never lost the shine and luster that they'd see looking after them, with all the nights Urokodaki spent on making sure it maintained its color and shape.
"Are you worried about Urokodaki?"
How did she figure that out so fast?
"No," He quickly replied, but (Y/N) had already noticed his tense shoulders and had put her hand on them.
"He will be healthy and safe. We will all be here for him."
Sabito said nothing, continuing to stare at the trees.
"Do you think Tanjiro started the Final Selection yet?" (Y/N) changed the subject while removing her hand from him and stretching them out. Sabito closed his eyes and was able to sense both Tanjiro and that cursed demon in the mountains. They were so close together, so much so that Sabito had no other option but to assume that they'd already encountered one another. Once that demon spots Tanjiro, there's no way he'll let him go without a fight.
"He's already facing that demon."
"Already?!" (Y/N) exclaimed, almost tilting off the rock with the way she jumped. "Didn't the Final Selection just start?"
"It was only a matter of time." Makomo appeared and stood beside the rock. "Sabito, (Y/N)-nee, do you think Tanjiro can really do it?"
(Y/N) looked at him, waiting for his answer. He spoke carefully, thinking about what he truly wanted to say, "I don't know, but no amount of effort is too much." He looked down at Makomo's wide, concerned eyes. "And you know that too, right?"
