Fitz smiled  one of his fake smiles as Sophie left. She had gushed about how glad she was to have a boyfriend and "wait until Marella hears".

As the gate closed, he heard rustling behind him. He whipped around. Biana appeared, a grin as big and sly as the Cheshire Cat's.

"Fitz, you're in trouble." she declared. "You're so not in love."

Fitz glared at her. "And what makes you think that?"

Biana let her smug grin soften. "You look exactly like you did that time you agreed to go with Maruca to the Foxfire dance in Level One because her crush rejected her."

Fitz rolled his eyes. What did she know? "It's none of your business."

His little sister let out an impatient sigh. "Look, what I'm trying to say is, Sophie's my best friend. You're my brother. I don't want you guys to break eachother's—"

Fitz broke in. "I won't. I won't. For all you know, I'm truly in love with her. You don't need to do anything." He huffed, starting back to Everglen. Biana instead turned a different direction and headed further into the wilderness of the property.

"Where are you going?" Fitz demanded to know, running behind her. It was only as she began climbing the tree that Fitz knew.

"Our secret hideout," Biana said. "Don't you remember our secret plans to prank Alvar? And then he'd always appear because he'd been invisible listening the whole time?"

Fitz laughed. A real, almost childish laugh. But then he remembered he was cool and his sister was not. He was annoyed with her. "Why are we here?" he interrogated.

Biana smirked. "To ensure nobody gets hurt," she announced in a clear voice, "we need to make a plan."
