A beat of the heart.
That's all the time needed for your world to flip a whole one eighty degrees, changing everything you planned and prepared for.
That single second can give you all the happiness in the world, at the time when you least expect it, when you don't even want it, making you the luckiest man in the world. It can throw a person so beautiful in your life who can shape your world and make their own place in it too, giving you a new life, something you lost hopes of. It can make you question what good you did in your life to get it all, but maybe you won't ever get your answer.
At the same time, one single second can take everything away from you before you can even blink, leaving you with nothing but emptiness, drilling a void in your life and heart. The same person who once showed you light and dragged you in a world enlightened by everything pure, also holds the power to take it all away in a heartbeat with themself, leaving you with nothing but the same barrenness from earlier.
Trusting the universe for being so generous to you is the most foolish thing a man can do. Because if it's giving you something which you aren't expecting, doesn't need but crave deep down, it's actually because it's going to snatch it away from you after you are addicted, when you least expect it.
And that's when the pain starts.
That's when it hurts.
You get addicted to something you never wanted, but needed deep down, something which changed you, something which made you feel like you deserve to be loved too, that you deserve all the good too. And then, when you finally start believing it all, you realise that it was all just a mirage.
Yet, even after all this, you learn to live with the pain, numb it at times too. You try to fill the void that has been created in your life with something else, something that helps you keep your mind off that person or thing. And when you finally learn to do it, the universe plays its worst cards again.
