The morning sun poured through the tall, arched windows of the Duchess’s quarters, casting a warm and gentle glow over the room. The crispness of the air hinted at the start of a perfect autumn day, and the blooming flowers in the garden outside seemed to celebrate the new season with their vibrant hues.
Jane awoke to this picturesque scene, her thoughts brimming with anticipation and a hint of nervousness as she prepared for her day. Her lady's maid, Rosie, entered the room with a cheerful smile and a graceful curtsy.
Yes, she had retained Rosie. The young maid was efficient and attentive, and Jane had quickly grown accustomed to her presence. As Rosie set about the delicate task of arranging Jane’s hair and adjusting her gown, Jane felt a pang of warmth remembering Beth’s similar attentions.
“I trust you slept well, Your Grace?” Rosie inquired, her eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief.
Jane's cheeks flushed at the question, a delicate shade of pink colouring her complexion. She averted her gaze, trying to focus on the day ahead.
“Of course, I did, Rosie,” she said, forcing a casual smile. “Now, let’s not delay. We have a busy day ahead.”
Edward had left the manor early that morning to meet with his solicitor regarding some estate matters. Jane’s thoughts lingered on their marriage as she prepared.
Despite the challenges, she had chosen to forgive her father and embrace her new life with open heart. Heartland was indeed enchanting. Jane had already begun to appreciate its charm, from the scenic landscape to the warm and welcoming people.
Mrs. Anne, the housekeeper, had been a beacon of kindness. She had shown Jane around the estate, sharing stories and offering her insights. Mrs. Anne’s friendly behaviour and genuine warmth made Jane feel more at home with each passing day.
“Thank you, Mrs. Anne, for everything today,” Jane said, her eyes reflecting her gratitude as she bade the housekeeper farewell for the evening.
“You’re always welcome, my dear,” Mrs. Anne replied with a motherly smile. “You’re part of the family now.”
Feeling a sense of contentment, Jane ascended the grand staircase to the bedchamber she shared with Edward. It was an elegant room, adorned with rich fabrics and tastefully chosen furnishings. The walls were covered in a soft, pastel wallpaper, and the large canopy bed, draped in silk, stood as the room’s centrepiece.
The soft light from the sconces cast a warm, inviting glow, creating an atmosphere of understated wealth. Edward had insisted upon sharing this space, and though Jane had her reservations, she found herself adapting to the new arrangement.
By the time Jane made her way down for dinner, the dining room was already set. Edward was seated at the head of the table, his posture straight and composed. As Jane entered, she felt a flutter of nerves.
Her lavender gown, which had been chosen with care, seemed to glimmer with each step she took. Edward's gaze lingered on her for a moment, and though his expression remained guarded, there was a fleeting softness in his eyes.
“Your Grace,” Jane greeted as she took her seat at the far end of the table.
Edward’s eyes flickered with a touch of amusement.
“Please, join me over here,” he said, motioning to the chair beside him. “There’s no need to be so far and formal now.”
Jane moved to the seat he had indicated and settled in, offering him a small, grateful smile.
“How did your day go?” Edward asked, his voice betraying a hint of genuine curiosity.
Jane looked up from her plate, momentarily at a loss for words.
“It was quite pleasant, Edward,” she said, trying to match the ease in his tone. “Heartland is a lovely place, and the tenants are very welcoming.”
“That’s good to hear,” Edward replied, taking a bite of his meal. “Are you busy tomorrow?”
Jane raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “I’m not sure. Is there something you need?”
“There’s a festival in the village tomorrow,” Edward explained. “I was hoping you might accompany me.”
Jane’s eyes brightened with interest.
“I’d love to,” she responded with a genuine smile. “Thank you for inviting me.”
As they continued their dinner, the conversation flowed more naturally, and Jane found herself enjoying Edward’s company.
Though their marriage was based on conditions rather than affection, these moments of shared conversation and mutual respect provided a chance of hope.
