"So." Sophie stated blankly, but not hiding the underlying anxiousness in her voice. "You said you wanted to tell me something." Sophie stood in a glittering corridor of Everglen, wearing her new favorite dress: knee-length, teal, laced, and adorned with god knows how many pockets.
Last time they stood in this exact spot, Sophie had confessed her crush on him, and Fitz, a whirlwind of confused emotion, admitted some sort of affection for her. And now, here they were, Fitz about to break her heart.
Stop stalling. Deep breath.
"Well, matchmaking is coming up, you know?" Fitz started. Sophie drew in a deep breath. "And my number one choice isn't exactly able to... you know... well, be on my match list."
Sophie's eyes widened, and Fitz wondered if she'd already gotten the memo that he was breaking up with her, if they'd even been a couple before.
"And?" Sophie said quietly.
Fitz nervously shuffled. "And... and I wanted to ask for your advice... and um." Fitz gulped. "our status?"
He'd done it. He'd broken up with her. He replayed the conversation in his head. Suddenly, he realized, but it was too late.
"Fitz." Sophie almost... giggled? "God, Fitz." she leaned against the wall and started laughing. "I've been waiting, wondering where we stand... and you're finally... we're finally, well, us! I can't even."
Sophie gave Fitz a big hug and took a big breath. "I'd be delighted to be your girlfriend."
Dun dun dun..... not exactly what he wanted, eh?
